BEIJING // Eamon Sullivan of Australia broke the men's swimming 100 metres freestyle world record on the first leg of the final of men's 4x100m freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympics on Monday. Sullivan clocked 47.24 seconds to beat the previous world record of 47.50 set by the Frenchman Alain Bernard at the European championships in Eindhoven, Holland, in March. The Australian team were beaten in to third place by the United States, who took gold and France who took silver.
The American Michael Phelps remains on track for a record eight Olympic titles after his team's victory. *Reuters
