The English Premier League was back this week, after a gap of what felt like several days since the last season finished.

Champions Liverpool were in action on the opening day and Mohamed Salah was straight into the goals.

The Egyptian striker scored a hat-trick, including a last-gasp match-winning penalty to earn Liverpool a thrilling 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield.

Over in France, there was chaos in the classique clash between between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille at Parc des Princes where five players were sent off.

Star attacker Neymar was among those shown a red card after a late brawl between the two teams but the Brazilian would later claim he was racially abused by Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

In tennis, the US Open was completed in front of empty stands at Flushing Meadows with Naomi Osaka winning the women's title after coming from a set down to beat Victoria Azarenka to seal her third major title.

In the men's final, Dominic Thiem claimed his first Grand Slam title at the fourth time of asking after coming from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev. The Austrian had lost his previous three Slam finals.
