ROME // Ferrari would not trade Felipe Massa for McLaren's Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, the Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said.
The 23-year-old Hamilton became the youngest world title winner after he edged out Massa by snatching fifth place on the final bend of November's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix.
Last week the Briton said that he would never leave McLaren but the Ferrari supremo declared he would not take him over his Brazilian driver anyway.
"Hamilton is a great driver, capable of coming close to the world title in his first year in Formula One and winning it in the second," Montezemolo told La Gazzetta dello Sport's website.
"But with all respect, I wouldn't swap him for Felipe Massa.
"If Massa did not win it this year, we (the team) were to blame. It would have been normal for him to win. He didn't manage to because of our mistakes."
Montezemolo added that there would have been an exodus from F1 if proposals for a standard engine had been approved.
The plan was not included in cost-cutting measures approved last week to help the sport after the global economic crisis led to Honda's withdrawal.
"If the standard engine had gone through for all teams, at least four or five carmakers would have abandoned [F1]," he said. "I mean four or five plus Ferrari, i.e. all of them."

New UK refugee system

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.
