DUBAI // Nasser Saleh al Attiyah cruised to victory in the 32nd Dubai International Rally yesterday but lost his FIA Middle East title to fellow Qatari driver Misfer al Marri.
Al Attiyah vowed to finish in first place after Qatar won the bid to host 2022 World Cup. "It has been a perfect rally and I'm very happy with the result," said al Attiyah. "I'm happy for Misfer as he is the new champion."
Emirati drivers had mixed fortunes in their home race. Sheikh Abdullah al Qassimi finished second in a Mitsubishi Evolution 9, but Sheikh Khalid al Qassimi went out with a blown engine while leading the first leg.
The second leg brought a spectacular premature end to the rally for Rashid al Ketbi. The UAE driver made a flying start to the day, winning the opening stage by 3.4secs from al Attiyah, but then went out of the rally 6.32km into the next stage when his Super Skoda Fabia Evo 2 rolled end over end after hitting a bump at speed.
Al Ketbi and his co-driver Khalid al Kendi were unhurt.
There were no such problems for al Attiyah. Partnered by the Italian Giovanni Bernacchini in a Super 2000 Ford Fiesta, he enjoyed a winning margin of 6mins 16secs.
Needing only to finish in the top six to become the fourth Qatari to win the FIA Middle East championship, al Marri took his Subaru Impreza to third place.
Abdulaziz al Kuwari of Qatar claimed fourth position with a late burst on the final stage, dropping Kuwait's Essam al Nejadi to fifth in the eighth and final round of this year's FIA Middle East series.
It was al Attiyah's 38th rally victory in the championship and his sixth in Dubai. While the six-time Middle East champion has become a prolific winner, al Marri is only the second driver in the history of the regional series to capture the Middle East title without recording a victory in the series. Saudi Arabia's Mamdouh Khayat was the first, in 1992.
Consistency was the key to al Marri's success. He finished second in Qatar, Jordan, Saudi and Cyprus and third in Lebanon and Syria, as well as in Dubai.

Devesh Mamtani from Century Financial believes the cash-hoarding tendency of each generation is influenced by what stage of the employment cycle they are in. He offers the following insights:
Baby boomers (those born before 1964): Owing to market uncertainty and the need to survive amid competition, many in this generation are looking for options to hoard more cash and increase their overall savings/investments towards risk-free assets.
Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980): Gen X is currently in its prime working years. With their personal and family finances taking a hit, Generation X is looking at multiple options, including taking out short-term loan facilities with competitive interest rates instead of dipping into their savings account.
Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996): This market situation is giving them a valuable lesson about investing early. Many millennials who had previously not saved or invested are looking to start doing so now.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues

Labour dispute
