Paul Chatenay and Atef Al Barwani were standouts on yesterday’s final day of the SWS Grand Finals at Racing Kart de Cormeilles (RKC) on the outskirts of Paris.
The annual international motorsport event, which determines the best of the best, attracted 75 of the world’s top SWS drivers.
Chatenay claimed third place in the World Masters Super Final to be the only UAE-based driver to qualify for the main event of the SWS weekend.
Chatenay lead the race going into the final lap but was grabbed at the line by Simon Delvenne, who claimed victory, and Kevin Caprasse, who finished second, with just 0.135 seconds separating the trio.
The Abu Dhabi-based Frenchman said: “It is a bittersweet result. But of course I am happy to be third, but in my heart I know I could have won the World Masters Super Final.”
Al Barwani of the newly formed F3 Racing team, showed his determination to succeed as he won the World Masters 2 final from sixth place on the grid.
“It was a privilege to wear the F3 Racing colours at the SWS Grand Finals and in the end I am happy with the result,” the Emirati said.
“Bringing home a trophy was one of my objectives and this I achieved with the win in the World Masters 2 final. Mission accomplished.”
Other UAE-based drivers who flew home with silverware included Maz Nawaz, Abdullah Al Ali, Craig Shenton and Alexandre Silanine.
On Saturday, CG Racing Pro powered to third place in the SWS Endurance Grand Finals in what was a tight contest between the world’s top endurance karting teams.
Having finished second in the SWS Grand Finals last year, the Dubai-based team were confident of gaining the top step of the podium on the weekend.
Italian outfit Pastino Veneto Corse, however, proved too strong and took top honours in the 12 hours finale.
Modave Racing PPS, from Belgium, stalked the Italians all the way to finish second, 15.9 seconds adrift, with CG Racing on their back wheel in third after a strong showing by drivers David Terrien, Piers Pakenham-Walsh and Rami Azzam.
