AC Milan fans hoping to see Mario Balotelli hit top form for the first city derby of the season were kept in check Friday by coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.
Balotelli, who has returned to the San Siro on a season-long loan deal, hit the opener, provided an assist and won a penalty on Thursday as Milan beat fourth division side Modena 3-2 in a friendly during the break for international fixtures.
Balotelli’s goal from distance showed the striker, whose departure from Liverpool was widely applauded by Reds aficionados, has not lost his nose for goal.
But he has a long way to go until lasting a full 90 minutes, said Mihajlovic, whose revamped side are away to Inter Milan next week.

"He's not played for a while and he still has to improve," Mihajlovic told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He’s training well and his physical tests are satisfactory, but he’s three kilograms overweight: he’s on a diet and when he’s ready he will play.”
Milan CEO Adriano Galliani, meanwhile, rang a more positive tone when asked about Balotelli’s fitness and admitted the striker’s goal had got him “excited”.
“His fitness is improving, physically he’s in a good place and he can do what he wants when he has the ball. Let’s hope his goal augurs well for the rest of the season,” Galliani said.
“When I see goals like that I get excited.”
Milan, who like Inter failed to qualify for Europe this season, have one defeat and one win from their opening two games of the season.
However Inter arguably made better acquisitions in the summer transfer market, notably signing Stevan Jovetic on a loan deal (Manchester City), midfielders Geoffrey Kondogbia (Monaco) and Felipe Melo (Galatasaray), forward Adem Ljajic (Roma) and Brazilian defender Alex Telles (Galatasaray).
Jovetic has hit three goals in two games to push Inter up to third place behind surprise leaders Chievo and Torino, and there is an air of renewed optimism in the blue and black half of the city.
In their own friendly on Thursday, Inter suffered a 2-1 loss to lower league side Lecco, but coach Roberto Mancini used the game to test some of his younger players.
“It was important to give some of the lads some playing time and have a look at some of the youngsters,” he told Inter Channel.
“I thought Felipe Melo and Alex Telles played quite well.
“We experimented with a few things and didn’t want to make the senior players stay out there for more than 60 minutes.”

Country-size land deals
US interest in purchasing territory is not as outlandish as it sounds. Here's a look at some big land transactions between nations:
Louisiana Purchase
If Donald Trump is one who aims to broker "a deal of the century", then this was the "deal of the 19th Century". In 1803, the US nearly doubled in size when it bought 2,140,000 square kilometres from France for $15 million.
Florida Purchase Treaty
The US courted Spain for Florida for years. Spain eventually realised its burden in holding on to the territory and in 1819 effectively ceded it to America in a wider border treaty.
Alaska purchase
America's spending spree continued in 1867 when it acquired 1,518,800 km2 of Alaskan land from Russia for $7.2m. Critics panned the government for buying "useless land".
The Philippines
At the end of the Spanish-American War, a provision in the 1898 Treaty of Paris saw Spain surrender the Philippines for a payment of $20 million.
US Virgin Islands
It's not like a US president has never reached a deal with Denmark before. In 1917 the US purchased the Danish West Indies for $25m and renamed them the US Virgin Islands.
Gwadar
The most recent sovereign land purchase was in 1958 when Pakistan bought the southwestern port of Gwadar from Oman for 5.5bn Pakistan rupees.
Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
