Net gains for rusty duo is first task for Martin O'Neill at Sunderland

Martin O'Neill takes charge of his first game as Sunderland manager today, and he has made getting the best out of striker Nicklas Bendtner one of his key priorities.

The Dane moved to the Stadium of Light this summer on a season-long loan from Arsenal, but has so far failed to have a major effect and has managed only two goals.

Trouble finding the net is the main reason Sunderland find themselves embroiled in the struggle at the foot of the table having managed only 16 goals in 14 Premier League matches.

O'Neill appreciates it may have taken Bendtner some time to get used to playing for a new club, and he is a doubt for today's crunch clash against Blackburn Rovers with a groin injury, but the manager is determined bring out the best in the 23 year old.

"I think that is paramount," said O'Neill. "He has a lot of natural talent. He wasn't always in the starting line-up at Arsenal. They have allowed him to come up here and now it's an important time for him.

"This season is one where he can come through, he can score some goals."

Midfielder Craig Gardner, a summer signing from Birmingham City, also struggled to establish himself in the side under Bruce.

He is a player O'Neill knows well from his Aston Villa days, and the Northern Irishman is hoping Gardner can begin to play a full part.

O'Neill said: "I sold Craig to Birmingham but the players who were keeping Craig out of the team were all England internationals, so it was going to be hard for Craig to play, and he wanted to play first-team football.

"But he is genuinely a terrific lad and he can score a goal, and I'm sure he's relishing the challenge ahead of him again."

While O'Neill hopes today will yield maximum points after a run of only one point from four matches, one thing he does not expect to change is the attitude of the players.

"I think that would be really unfair on Steve Bruce's time here to start talking about a change of attitude," he said. "I hate that when you leave a football club and the next thing you know somebody who hasn't played for the last few weeks - because generally speaking he hasn't been good enough - has then come out and criticised the manager, and said now is his chance.

"I think the attitude of the players has always been pretty decent."

Visitors Blackburn have not had trouble scoring goals of late, with nine in their past three league games, and manager Steve Kean has backed on-fire striker Yakubu to become the first Rovers player to top 20 Premier League goals in a season since Alan Shearer in 1996.

Yakubu has already hit the back of the net nine times in eight starts in the league so far this campaign - including all four last weekend in the 4-2 victory over Swansea City.

"He has an eye for goal and he's in a position now when he gets any chance he expects to score," said Kean. "If we can keep him fit there is no reason why he can't get those 20 goals in the season."

Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Akira Back Dubai

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as,  “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:

- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools

- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say

- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance

- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs

- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills

- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month

- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
