The five goals represented a career high for Ronaldo, who netted a hat-trick in the span of eight minutes before the half and adding two more after it. Gareth Bale drove home the opener, Karim Benzema scored twice after half time and a Diego Mainz own goal made for Real reaching cloud nine.
"What more can I say about him?" asked Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. "It is the first time he has scored five goals with Real Madrid which is great for him and for us looking forward to the next game."
Ronaldo tweeted afterward, “Happy to have scored five goals with this excellent teamwork. Thank you for all your support.”
The win, however, did not bring Real any closer to the Spanish title, as Barcelona escaped from a “difficult” match with Celta Vigo with a 1-0 win to remain on top by four points.
