MLB: Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees win divisions

The Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees signed off in style with big wins as they clinched American League divisional titles on the final day of the regular season.

The A's landed the AL West title by toppling long-time leaders the Texas Rangers 12-5 at the Coliseum, and the Yankees crushed the Boston Red Sox 14-2 in New York to tie up the AL East.

Having trailed Texas by 13 games at one stage this season, Oakland had been steadily clawing back that lead and entered the last night on level terms with the Rangers.

It meant their tussle was winner-takes-all, and briefly it seemed Texas were destined to capture the title after all, as they surged 5-1 in front.

The lead was swiftly wiped out though as Oakland completed a sweep of the series to reach the post-season as divisional champions and leave their visitors resigned to a wild-card play-off clash against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Texas will have home advantage in Arlington.

Oakland's stunning improvement in the second half of the season now sees them head into the business end of the year on a six-match winning run.

When AJ Griffin gave up five runs at the top of the third inning, it looked as though Oakland's spectacular recovery may have run its course.

Yet Oakland took six runs from Ryan Dempster and Derek Holland in the fourth inning, going ahead when Josh Hamilton at centre field dropped a catching chance and allowed two through to score.

Derek Norris lifted Oakland four clear with a home run in the eighth, and Texas offered little in response.

The Yankees knew they had the AL East in the bag before their one-sided contest with Boston finished, after nearest rivals Baltimore stumbled to defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano both homered twice for New York.

Evan Longoria went one better for Tampa Bay in their 4-1 win over Baltimore.

His three homers denied a side who had to win and hope for a stunning upset in New York, where Boston, bottom of the AL East, were unable to turn around a seven-match losing streak which stretched to eight as their campaign reached a dismal conclusion.

For the first time since 1967, when Boston's Carl Yastrzemski achieved the feat, the major leagues have a Triple Crown winner.

Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers finished the regular season as the player with the highest batting average (.330) and most home runs (45), and as RBI leader (139). The 29-year-old Venezuelan is a seven-time All-Star and was cheered by the Kansas City crowd during Detroit's 1-0 victory over the Royals. Detroit had already secured the AL Central title.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig led the praise, saying: "It is an honour to congratulate Miguel Cabrera on earning the Triple Crown, a remarkable achievement that places him amongst an elite few in all of baseball history.

"Miguel has long been one of the most accomplished hitters in the game, and this recognition is one that he will be able to cherish for the rest of his career in baseball and beyond.

"As the Tigers prepare for the post-season, we have a global stage to witness Miguel's talent, which will go down as one of the hallmarks of Major League Baseball's extraordinary 2012 regular season."

The Toronto Blue Jays edged out the Minnesota Twins 2-1 to sweep their three-game series, as Venezuelan former All-Star shortstop Omar Vizquel brought his career to an end at the age of 45 and finished on a winning note.

Casper Wells had a three-run homer in the Seattle Mariners' 12-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels and Dan Johnson hit three home runs in the Chicago White Sox's 9-0 trouncing of the Cleveland Indians.

There were fewer issues to decide in the National League.

NL East winners the Washington Nationals rounded off their regular-season campaign with a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Washington will have home advantage through the post-season owing to their major league-high total of 98 victories.

The Atlanta Braves warmed up for Friday's wild-card clash with the St Louis Cardinals by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0.

St Louis also won, in their case 1-0 against NL Central champions Cincinnati. The Reds were on 97 wins heading into the contest but could not match Washington's season total.

The Los Angeles Dodgers finished their season on a high with a 5-1 win against NL West winners the San Francisco Giants, while the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 and the Colorado Rockies overcame the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1.

In matches between teams who had long given up hope of reaching the post-season, the Chicago Cubs squeezed home 5-4 against the Houston Astros while the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 4-2.

FFP EXPLAINED

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.

What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.

What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.

5 of the most-popular Airbnb locations in Dubai

Bobby Grudziecki, chief operating officer of Frank Porter, identifies the five most popular areas in Dubai for those looking to make the most out of their properties and the rates owners can secure:

• Dubai Marina

The Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are popular locations, says Mr Grudziecki, due to their closeness to the beach, restaurants and hotels.

Frank Porter’s average Airbnb rent:
One bedroom: Dh482 to Dh739
Two bedroom: Dh627 to Dh960
Three bedroom: Dh721 to Dh1,104

• Downtown

Within walking distance of the Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and the famous fountains, this location combines business and leisure.  “Sure it’s for tourists,” says Mr Grudziecki. “Though Downtown [still caters to business people] because it’s close to Dubai International Financial Centre."

Frank Porter’s average Airbnb rent:
One bedroom: Dh497 to Dh772
Two bedroom: Dh646 to Dh1,003
Three bedroom: Dh743 to Dh1,154

• City Walk

The rising star of the Dubai property market, this area is lined with pristine sidewalks, boutiques and cafes and close to the new entertainment venue Coca Cola Arena.  “Downtown and Marina are pretty much the same prices,” Mr Grudziecki says, “but City Walk is higher.”

Frank Porter’s average Airbnb rent:
One bedroom: Dh524 to Dh809
Two bedroom: Dh682 to Dh1,052
Three bedroom: Dh784 to Dh1,210

• Jumeirah Lake Towers

Dubai Marina’s little brother JLT resides on the other side of Sheikh Zayed road but is still close enough to beachside outlets and attractions. The big selling point for Airbnb renters, however, is that “it’s cheaper than Dubai Marina”, Mr Grudziecki says.

Frank Porter’s average Airbnb rent:
One bedroom: Dh422 to Dh629
Two bedroom: Dh549 to Dh818
Three bedroom: Dh631 to Dh941

• Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah's proximity to luxury resorts is attractive, especially for big families, says Mr Grudziecki, as Airbnb renters can secure competitive rates on one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations.

Frank Porter’s average Airbnb rent:
One bedroom: Dh503 to Dh770
Two bedroom: Dh654 to Dh1,002
Three bedroom: Dh752 to Dh1,152

How The Debt Panel's advice helped readers in 2019

December 11: 'My husband died, so what happens to the Dh240,000 he owes in the UAE?'

JL, a housewife from India, wrote to us about her husband, who died earlier this month. He left behind an outstanding loan of Dh240,000 and she was hoping to pay it off with an insurance policy he had taken out. She also wanted to recover some of her husband’s end-of-service liabilities to help support her and her son.

“I have no words to thank you for helping me out,” she wrote to The Debt Panel after receiving the panellists' comments. “The advice has given me an idea of the present status of the loan and how to take it up further. I will draft a letter and send it to the email ID on the bank’s website along with the death certificate. I hope and pray to find a way out of this.”

November 26:  ‘I owe Dh100,000 because my employer has not paid me for a year’

SL, a financial services employee from India, left the UAE in June after quitting his job because his employer had not paid him since November 2018. He owes Dh103,800 on four debts and was told by the panellists he may be able to use the insolvency law to solve his issue.

SL thanked the panellists for their efforts. "Indeed, I have some clarity on the consequence of the case and the next steps to take regarding my situation," he says. "Hopefully, I will be able to provide a positive testimony soon."

October 15: 'I lost my job and left the UAE owing Dh71,000. Can I return?'

MS, an energy sector employee from South Africa, left the UAE in August after losing his Dh12,000 job. He was struggling to meet the repayments while securing a new position in the UAE and feared he would be detained if he returned. He has now secured a new job and will return to the Emirates this month.

“The insolvency law is indeed a relief to hear,” he says. "I will not apply for insolvency at this stage. I have been able to pay something towards my loan and credit card. As it stands, I only have a one-month deficit, which I will be able to recover by the end of December."
