DUBAI // AC Milan, one of the giants of European football, are to play Al Ahli in Dubai on January 2, it was announced yesterday.
The match, titled the Emirates Challenge Cup by the sponsoring airline, will be part of the Italian club's winter training camp in the UAE.
Milan are seven-time winners of the Uefa Champions League and have won 17 domestic league championships.
The current Milan team, which includes big-name players such as Swede Zlatan Imbrahimovic, and Brazilians Robinho and Ronaldinho, lead the Serie A standings just ahead of the Christmas break in Italy.
They are scheduled to arrive in Dubai on December 28 and will conduct several training sessions which will be open to the public, organisers said.
"This will be a really good boost for the team, particularly the younger players who are really looking forward to testing themselves against one of the best-known football clubs in Europe," James Yandle, the commercial director at Al Ahli, said.
"We all know the quality of football played in Milan and it will be great for the people who come along every week to see the players they support every week go up against a real world-class team."
Milan will train at Al Ahli's stadium during their stay in Dubai, said Mohammed Matter, a senior vice president at Emirates.
Ahli have a prominent Italian footballer of their own in Fabio Cannavaro, the 37-year-old defender and captain who played for five Italian clubs, including Milan's rival Inter, before joining Ahli on a two-year contract before the current season.
Ahli lie fifth in the Pro League table, nine points behind league-leaders Al Jazira with one game in hand.
Other current Milan players include Kevin-Prince Boateng, Clarence Seedorf and Italian internationals past and present Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Nesta.
Ahmed Khalifa Hammed, the chief executive at Al Ahli, said: "We are so looking forward to welcoming some of the greatest names in football to Dubai."
He added: "The players at Al Ahli are all eager to get out there to take on AC Milan."
Milan will be making their third trip to Dubai for winter training next month.
Their last visit, two years ago, included a match against Hamburg, the German club.
Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, became a shirt sponsor of AC Milan at the start of the current season. The new Fly Emirates shirt sponsor deal, announced in February, is spread over five years.
Organisers said details on how to purchase tickets for the match will be announced next week.

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
