Dubai // Mike de Kock dominated proceedings on Thursday at Meydan Racecourse's fourth meeting of the 2013 Dubai World Cup Carnival, saddling three of the six winners, including The Apache to give the trainer a record fifth win in the featured Group 2 Al Rashidiya.
Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, The Apache was having his first start locally and his first for De Kock, having been off for almost a year and surprised his trainer who said: "I really thought he would need this so that is very pleasing. It would be nice to think he is a horse for Dubai World Cup night."
The South African saddled Musir to win the 1,800m turf contest last year.
Soumillon had earlier steered Rerouted to a win the 1,400m Tapeta handicap to provide the middle leg of the trainer's treble and initiate his own double. Rerouted is part-owned by Lee Westwood, who was present to greet his winner, fresh from a good afternoon in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The golfer said: "It has been a good day and I am delighted for this horse who has run some great races in defeat."
Earlier De Kock had uttered a similar response after Mushreq made it third time lucky this year in the opening 2,000m turf handicap with Paul Hanagan in the saddle. He said: "Nothing had gone right in his first two runs so Paul did the right thing and kept him out of trouble."
Not for the first time Saeed bin Suroor, the Godolphin trainer, supplied a one-two with Ted Durcan and Kassiano denying stable companion Con Artist with Silvestre de Sousa on the runner-up.
Bin Suroor said: "We have made a fast start to the Carnival and that is another good result for the team."
That was over 1,900m on Tapeta and his fellow Godolphin handler Mahmoud Al Zarooni was also on the score sheet, combining with Mickael Barzalona to land the concluding 1,400m turf handicap with Time Prisoner.
The UK opened their 2013 tally with Medicean Man providing the trainer Jeremy Gask a winner with his very first UAE runner in a 1,000m turf handicap in which Bear Behind set a scorching pace. However, Harry Bentley was easing closer on the winner who hit the front over a furlong out and ran on strongly.
Bentley said : "A flat five furlongs really suits him and that early gallop has given him tiring horses to aim at. The Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night would a target but the end of March is a long way away."

Will the pound fall to parity with the dollar?
The idea of pound parity now seems less far-fetched as the risk grows that Britain may split away from the European Union without a deal.
Rupert Harrison, a fund manager at BlackRock, sees the risk of it falling to trade level with the dollar on a no-deal Brexit. The view echoes Morgan Stanley’s recent forecast that the currency can plunge toward $1 (Dh3.67) on such an outcome. That isn’t the majority view yet – a Bloomberg survey this month estimated the pound will slide to $1.10 should the UK exit the bloc without an agreement.
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that Britain will leave the EU on the October 31 deadline with or without an agreement, fuelling concern the nation is headed for a disorderly departure and fanning pessimism toward the pound. Sterling has fallen more than 7 per cent in the past three months, the worst performance among major developed-market currencies.
“The pound is at a much lower level now but I still think a no-deal exit would lead to significant volatility and we could be testing parity on a really bad outcome,” said Mr Harrison, who manages more than $10 billion in assets at BlackRock. “We will see this game of chicken continue through August and that’s likely negative for sterling,” he said about the deadlocked Brexit talks.
The pound fell 0.8 per cent to $1.2033 on Friday, its weakest closing level since the 1980s, after a report on the second quarter showed the UK economy shrank for the first time in six years. The data means it is likely the Bank of England will cut interest rates, according to Mizuho Bank.
The BOE said in November that the currency could fall even below $1 in an analysis on possible worst-case Brexit scenarios. Options-based calculations showed around a 6.4 per cent chance of pound-dollar parity in the next one year, markedly higher than 0.2 per cent in early March when prospects of a no-deal outcome were seemingly off the table.
