Rangers manager Mark Warburton says his side’s Scottish Cup semi-final win over Old Firm rivals Celtic should quiet some of the club’s critics.
Warburton, who led his side to a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win against his club’s fierce rivals after extra-time ended 2-2, was irritated by some sceptics who had suggested before the game that the fallen Glasgow giants had no chance against the Scottish Premiership leaders.
However, after booking their place in a first Scottish Cup final since 2009 Warburton said his players, who have also clinched the Scottish Championship and Challenge Cup this season, deserved more respect.
“Celtic were the favourites and I can understand this,” the Rangers manager said.
“But I was irritated by people underestimating Rangers. We’ve been good this season. We’re not clear in the league by 13 points by chance.
“We deserve to be and the young squad has come together quickly. All credit to the players, I think they deserved a little bit more respect.
“I read some outrageous reports about them getting battered by Celtic today. Well they showed today that they’ve got quality, they’ve got the commitment and the work ethic and that gap is a lot, lot narrower than people are talking about.”

The match at Hampden was just the second time in four years that the Glasgow giants have clashed since Rangers were forced to start life again in the country’s bottom tier following an amazing fall from grace that resulted in liquidation in June 2012.
The match was seen as a gauge of how big the gap between the sides is, but despite victory Warburton warned against any sort of complacency in the Rangers ranks.
“The best team won on the day but Celtic are a team packed with international players with European experience and we have to recognise that,” the former Brentford coach, whose side could end their four-year European exile with victory against Hibernian in May’s final, said.
“Nothing has changed; we’ve got to work hard to close the gap.
“We can’t go into next season being satisfied with coming second, third or fourth or whatever it may be. We have to go in next season to be highly competitive.
“To do that we’ve got to keep working hard on and off the pitch.”
Kenny Miller opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Erik Sviatchenko’s 50th minute header took the match to extra time.
Barrie McKay restored Rangers’ advantage in the 96th minute and Australian international Tom Rogic levelled matters 10 minutes later before he missed the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out.
The defeat heaps more pressure on Celtic manager Ronny Deila, who has come in for criticism this season for some lacklustre displays culminating in another early European exit and a defeat to Ross County in the League Cup semi-final.
However, Deila refused to discuss his future after the game.
“You know you are going to get that pressure all the time when you don’t get the results you wanted but after this game it is hard to talk about those things,” the Norwegian said.
“There are a lot of emotions going on but with bad results you of course get the questions. Now, the only thought is to lift ourselves and get the league title to Celtic Park.”
Rangers’ promotion will see the resumption of regular Old Firm matches in the Scottish Premiership from next season, but Deila said his side would be ready for them
“We will see next year what they have to offer. It is a totally different thing to do something over 38 games that do it over one,” the Celtic coach said.
“Of course they have improved and they are the second largest budget in the country so of course they will have pressure on them to perform.”

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
