Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is close to agreeing an 18-month contract with Major League Soccer team the Los Angeles Galaxy, according to a BBC report on Tuesday.

Gerrard, 34, announced on Friday that he is to leave Liverpool at the end of the season after a 25-year association with the club and subsequently revealed that he will move to the United States.

The BBC report, which did not cite any sources, said that the former England captain would sign a contract worth around £6 million ($9.1 million, 7.6 million euros) with the Galaxy.

A move to the Galaxy would reunite Gerrard with his old Liverpool team-mate Robbie Keane and see him follow in the footsteps of former England colleague David Beckham, who spent five years at the California club.

Gerrard scored twice for Liverpool in their 2-1 FA Cup third-round win at fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon on Monday, taking his tally for the season to nine goals.
