Iwelumo has a debut to forget

The bustling, breathless environs of Hampden Park today hosted a World Cup qualifier that dealt in miscalculations, but wound up being symbolised by one unforgettable miss. Scotland and Norway had over 20 attempts at trying to score, but all that anyone will recall is the ailing effort of Chris Iwelumo, who encountered the type of debut every good striker must dread.

With play racing from end to end at the midway point of the second half, the ashen-faced Wolves player raced on to Gary Naysmith's cross but, faced with an open goal, managed to prod the ball wide from three yards or so. Norway were well worthy of at least a draw. Scotland have four points from three games and with two matches against Holland looming, appear to be toiling to reach their first World Cup finals since France in 1998. @Email:dkane@thenational.ae
