Delhi Daredevils 152-6 in 20 overs (Yuvraj Singh 57, JP Duminy 28; Harbhajan Singh 2-11, Lasith Malinga 2-33) lost to Mumbai Indians 153-5 in 19.3 overs (Ambati Rayudu 49 not out, Rohit Sharma 46; Nathan Coulter-Nile 2-30, Amith Mishra 1-25).
Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Daredevils by five wickets to lift off from seventh on table to fourth in a rain-affected game at the Wankhede Stadium.
Though the overs remained at 20 the hosts were struggling to reach the 153-run target but a rejigged batting order held up. Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard remained unbeaten on 49 and 26 runs respectively, while captain Rohit Sharma, playing down at No 4, made 46.
Pollard and Ryudu plundered 53 runs in only 4.1 overs to seal a victory for the hosts in the thrilling encounter that swung one end from the other throughout and also had a couple of rain-induced stoppages.
Chasing a 153-run target, the home side suffered an early blow when Zaheer Khan’s in-swinger trapped Lendl Simmons in the front.
Hardik Pandya (5) perished in the very next over, with Imran Tahir catching a top edge off the bowling off Nathan Coulter-Nile. Mumbai then were eight for two in 1.5 overs then.
Looking to up the scoring rate, Parthiv Patel (13) and Harbhajan Singh (5), promoted in the batting order, departed in the space of two overs.
But Rohit Sharma steadied the ship before the final push.
Earlier, Harbhajan Singh (2-11) and Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga (2-33) applied the brakes well as Delhi Daredevils went in to bat first. Harbhajan Singh bowled 16 dot balls, the second-most this IPL after Mitchell Johnson’s 17 against Mumbai Indians.
