Sunil Narine has already changed the game.
He did that in 2012 when his 24 wickets led the Knight Riders to a first Indian Premier League (IPL) title, one their big-club status had virtually demanded from the birth of the league.
There cannot be too many more dangerous spinners in world cricket, especially in one-day games, than Narine. Saeed Ajmal is a genius across formats, but Narine in Twenty20s and 50-over games can often seem like a bigger mystery to solve.
It has become fashionable to distinguish these days between classical off-spinners, like Graeme Swann, and mystery spinners, such as Narine. The distinction is meant to somehow tar the latter with having illegal actions; witness the latest grumblings, ignited by Ravi Ashwin, over long-sleeved bowlers and short-sleeved ones.
But Narine is not a mystery off-spinner as much as he is a very modern one. He has an away-spinning ball of course, but it is his stock ball that is worth watching out for. With that high-arm he generally gets good bounce and also a fair rip, despite generally bowling flatter than most spinners.
It is really when and how he mixes up these two variations that stand him out. As a rule, he does not overdo the doosra. His game sense is outstanding, so that he knows precisely when he should be attacking which batsman, and when and whom he should be defensive against. He has gone entire games bowling one kind of delivery and concentrating on just one mode of attack at a particular batsman.
On a helpful surface, such as Eden Gardens, the combination of bounce, turn and his speed, take away most attacking options as a batsman. It is suicide to come down the pitch to loft him and equally to try to sweep. Going back becomes risky, too, and can reduce scoring options.
In picking him up during the 2012 auction, KKR were taking a punt.
He was little-known then and his value not entirely clear. But the reward in their investment was immediate, when he led the way to that first title and finished with the man-of-the-series award.
Even last season, as KKR sought to defend their title, he stood out. The franchise struggled to live up to their win and their batsmen, in particular, had a torrid time, as they finished seventh in the league.
But Narine was unrelenting, picking up 22 wickets.
He was the only bowler who bowled all his available overs during the league phase, an indicator of his reliability.
Tellingly, he led the charts on economy rate (for those who bowled at least 10 overs), conceding just 5.46 runs an over and he is already their all-time leading wicket taker in the IPL.
If KKR are to challenge this year or not, Narine will feature heavily either way.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Beit Al Khair Society

Dubai Cares
Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Emirates Airline Foundation
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
Emirates Red Crescent
