Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, is expected to miss the start of the English Premier League season after suffering an infection in a long-standing groin problem.
He is also likely to sit out of England's back-to-back Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.
The 31-year-old midfielder missed the end of last season and needed surgery on his groin.
"Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem," the Premier League club said on their website. "He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed."
The player will then return to Melwood, Liverpool's training and treatment centre, to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September.
Gerrard, who missed the club's pre-season tour of Asia this month in order to try to regain full fitness, is expected to be unavailable for Liverpool's first few games of the season, including the opening fixture at home to Sunderland, on August 13, and the away fixture to Arsenal on August 20.
