DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA // Doha can bid for the 2017 world championships with a late September date to avoid soaring summer temperatures, said Lamine Diack, the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) president.
The world championships are usually held in a July-August window, but the Ivorian has "nothing against" Qatar being able to schedule the event when it is notably cooler.
"For the world championships, it is possible to move dates," Diack said at a press conference marking the end of the August 27-September 4 world championships in Daegu, South Korea.
"We never said that a world championships had to take place in August every time. We have had some take place in September.
"I'll not be personally against the fact that our championship ends the season. I have nothing against it."
Diack said that Barcelona had decided at the last moment to drop out of the bidding process, leaving the Qatar capital in a two-horse race against London.
Qatar has already confirmed they would bid for the 2020 Olympics after receiving positive feedback from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board, who last week agreed to the Qatari city's request for a September 20 to October 20 time frame to stage the event.
Qatar has already won the right to host the first World Cup in the Middle East in 2022. The event will be held in June, with the plan to use air-conditioned stadiums, such as the template used at the Aspire Academy.
London announced last month that it will launch a bid led by Lord Sebastian Coe, the organising committee chairman for the 2012 London Olympics.
IAAF spokesman Nick Davies also confirmed that Barcelona had not submitted a bid to host the 2017 championships by the September 1 deadline. Budapest, who were also thought to be considering a bid, took a similar decision.
Davies added that the London bid was based on track and field taking place at the Olympic Stadium, which is at the centre of legal proceedings to determine who will be the future owners.
The IAAF is expected to announce the winning bid on November 11.
