Victoria Duval and Dan Evans made news at Flushing Meadows by knocking out the 11th seeds Sam Stosur and Kei Nishikori, respectively, in the first round of the US Open. A look at the greatest US Open shocks.

Kodes beat Newcombe (1971) The Czech Jan Kodes had won the French Open earlier in the year, but the clay-court specialist was unseeded when he ousted the top-seeded Australian John Newcombe, above, in a first-round shocker 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Austin beat Barker (1977) Tracy Austin, below, would later be a world No 1, but she was 14, unseeded and weighed 42kg when she stopped the No 4 seed Sue Barker of England 6-1, 6-4 in the third round. The victory made Austin late for the start of ninth grade.

Pioline beat Rafter (1999) The Frenchman Cedric Pioline, left, had twice been a grand slam finalist, but he was 30 and unseeded when he stunned the defending champion Patrick Rafter 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0. The Australian, the No 4 seed, played with an injured shoulder.

Arthurs beat Kuerten (2000) The big-serving Australian Wayne Arthurs, below, a left-handed doubles specialist, ushered the No 2 seed Gustavo Kuerten out of the tournament with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory. Kuerten was a former world No 1.

Coin beat Ivanovic (2008) The Frenchwoman Julie Coin won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw, then took down Ana Ivanovic, the top seed and world No 1 at the time, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Ivanovic was the first top seed to lose in the second round in New York in 40 years.
