ABU DHABI // "Spider-Man" is coming to Abu Dhabi with the aim of capturing the Falcon. That is the next mission of the Colombian Camilo Villegas, who is focusing on the prestigious Abu Dhabi Championship as his first 2010 target. Villegas, who has earned his nickname through a unique putting style where he hovers horizontally just above the green, will be seeking a first European Tour victory to go with the two he has from his US PGA Tour activities.
The distinctive Falcon trophy is held by England's Paul Casey, who won it for the second time on the National Course last January, and has also been lifted by Germany's Martin Kaymer and the American Chris DiMarco. Villegas, 27, who qualified for the recent Dubai World Championship at the end of his first year as a European Tour affiliated player, is the latest name to confirm his Abu Dhabi plans, joining the likes of Casey, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Geoff Ogilvy in the line-up for the event from January 21 to 24.
"I already have a good idea what to expect in Abu Dhabi and I believe that my game will suit the course set up," he said. "While the fairways are apparently very spacious, I have heard that accuracy will be key to avoid trouble, as wayward drives can be severely punished by the thick rough." "I have heard a lot about the tournament from my friends. I've been told I'll have an amazing week and we will stay in a stunning, luxurious hotel.
"We will play on a great course bathed in sunshine against a top-class field so of course I am looking forward to it very much." Villegas explained the evolution of his nickname. "The 'Spider-Man' position developed because I wanted to get a better read on my putts and have a really good look at the line. I guess I just got lower and lower. I am glad the fans enjoy watching and I certainly am enjoying my improved putting results."
