European Tour event to stay put

ABU DHABI // The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, which concluded with the closest finish in the event's five-year history last week, is to stay at its original venue next year. The National Course, which proved a splendid battleground for Martin Kaymer to overcome Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy in a tight finish, had been expected to give way next year to the Gary Player-designed Saadiyat Beach course, which was used for the first time last week.

Indeed, Faisal al Sheikh, head of the major events committee of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), who organise the annual event, suggested it was a formality for 2011. He said at the official launch of this year's tournament: "When you are in the process of hosting a top international event you try to showcase the best golf courses that you have. We are glad to have the National course here in Abu Dhabi but when you talk about a golf course designed by Gary Player next to the Gulf ocean then it is bound to be something spectacular.

"Abu Dhabi Golf Club is a mature club that has been established for 10 years and has proved to be an excellent venue for a European Tour event. The new clubs being constructed nearby will be another milestone in the history of golf in this emirate. As soon as those courses are ready to host this kind of tournament, believe me we will shift it immediately." The desire to allow the new Saadiyat course time to mature is understood to be the reason for the change of plan. Greg Sproule, a member of the Championship Committee, said: "Not only do the players continue to be most complimentary of the course itself, but our spectators, corporate hospitality guests and media partners have embraced the Championship's home at Abu Dhabi Golf Club as well."

Navdeep Suri, India's Ambassador to the UAE

There has been a longstanding need from the Indian community to have a religious premises where they can practise their beliefs. Currently there is a very, very small temple in Bur Dubai and the community has outgrown this. So this will be a major temple and open to all denominations and a place should reflect India’s diversity.

It fits so well into the UAE’s own commitment to tolerance and pluralism and coming in the year of tolerance gives it that extra dimension.

What we will see on April 20 is the foundation ceremony and we expect a pretty broad cross section of the Indian community to be present, both from the UAE and abroad. The Hindu group that is building the temple will have their holiest leader attending – and we expect very senior representation from the leadership of the UAE.

When the designs were taken to the leadership, there were two clear options. There was a New Jersey model with a rectangular structure with the temple recessed inside so it was not too visible from the outside and another was the Neasden temple in London with the spires in its classical shape. And they said: look we said we wanted a temple so it should look like a temple. So this should be a classical style temple in all its glory.

It is beautifully located - 30 minutes outside of Abu Dhabi and barely 45 minutes to Dubai so it serves the needs of both communities.

This is going to be the big temple where I expect people to come from across the country at major festivals and occasions.

It is hugely important – it will take a couple of years to complete given the scale. It is going to be remarkable and will contribute something not just to the landscape in terms of visual architecture but also to the ethos. Here will be a real representation of UAE’s pluralism.

Key findings of Jenkins report
  • Founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al Banna, "accepted the political utility of violence"
  • Views of key Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, Sayyid Qutb, have “consistently been understood” as permitting “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” and “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
  • Muslim Brotherhood at all levels has repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians.
  • Laying out the report in the House of Commons, David Cameron told MPs: "The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism."
Libya's Gold

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.

The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.

Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
