DUBAI // The modern face of the Premier League is best represented when one studies the cosmopolitan nature of a club like Hull City. Phil Brown said it is a big change from his own playing days of the 1980s and 1990s.
There were times in the past when Hull would have considered going beyond the East Riding of Yorkshire to snag a Scotsman or an Irishman as an international delicacy.
Brown will not attempt to guess the team he will put out at Sheffield United in the last 16 of the FA Cup on Saturday until tomorrow. He awaits news on how several players report back from excursions overseas.
It was the performance of the Brazilian forward Giovanni that excited Brown during Hull's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.
"Giovanni knows that if he puts a shift in, he has the ability. This season he has got to grips with the Premier League," said Brown.
"We are not quite the classy team that can afford to get the ball to him and carry him, but if 11 players put a shift in then he can blossom. He was one of the top men on Saturday, the icing on the cake."
Brown wants to be managing Hull in "six or seven years". He would like to progress the club to meet the expectations of supporters. Brown is of a mind that English managers should be looking to re-establish themselves abroad.
"I did my Pro Licence coaching badge so I could manage a Premier League club and manage abroad," he said.
"That is one of my ambitions. Why not? Look at the days of Terry Venables and Bobby Robson at Barcelona. Why not export good English managers, who are all technically gifted, and turn a foreign team into an English team in their own division."

How it works
Each player begins with one of the great empires of history, from Julius Caesar's Rome to Ramses of Egypt, spread over Europe and the Middle East.
Round by round, the player expands their empire. The more land they have, the more money they can take from their coffers for each go.
As unruled land and soldiers are acquired, players must feed them. When a player comes up against land held by another army, they can choose to battle for supremacy.
A dice-based battle system is used and players can get the edge on their enemy with by deploying a renowned hero on the battlefield.
Players that lose battles and land will find their coffers dwindle and troops go hungry. The end goal? Global domination of course.

What is graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.
It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.
But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.
