Another win and another clean sheet for Blue

  CHELSEA RATINGS: Edouard Mendy, 6 – This was set up to be an enticing battle as Mendy faced the club he departed just six weeks ago, but he was reduced to a single save as he secured a fifth consecutive clean sheet - the first Chelsea player to do so since Petr Cech in 2010. AP

  Reece James, 7 – Found himself with an abundance of space to attack on the right and he did so at every opportunity, galloping forward and delivering a series of inviting crosses into the box, including a pinpoint pass to pick out Tammy Abraham who made it 3-0. Getty

  Thiago Silva, 7 - It took the veteran centre-back a matter of seconds to register his first crunching tackle, but it was a fair one which set the tone for a commanding display from the hosts. He threw a couple of hollywood passes in to mix for good measure in a fine display. EPA

  Kurt Zouma 7 - Kept on his toes despite Chelsea’s dominance as Rennes still looked dangerous when they were able to work the ball into wide areas. He survived a first-half handball shout too, but kept his cool and deserved his clean sheet. AP

  Ben Chilwell, 7 – Forced to concede an early corner from Hamari Traore’s cross as Rennes looked to attack at speed, but beyond that he was given plenty of freedom to press high and his inviting low cross was desperately close to finding Abraham.

  N'Golo Kante, 6 - The industrious midfielder is often found nipping at attackers’ heels, but this time he went into the book for kicking the ball away. Ultimately though, he didn’t have to break a sweat in a contest that was much more like a training session at times. EPA

  Jorginho 6 – The Chelsea skipper replaced the absent Kai Havertz, who is self-isolating. He nearly grabbed an assist when his remarkable through-ball found Abraham, but the flag went up as the latter looked to round the goalkeeper. AP

  Mason Mount, 6 - The youngster suffered a painful clip of the heels as he looked to burst between two defenders in an otherwise quiet first half, but he played with more enthusiasm after the break. AP

  Hakim Ziyech, 7 - The former Ajax man is starting to show signs of his best form. He came close to opening the scoring early on with a teasing effort that dipped onto the roof of the net and gave a superb account of himself as he caused endless problems on the right. AP

  Tammy Abraham 8 - A constant nuisance after the break, he showed superb composure to tuck his side-footed half-volley into the corner to seal the win. Earlier, he had won his side’s second penalty when his shot on the spin struck Dalbert’s arm and saw the Brazilian harshly given his marching orders. AP

  Timo Werner, 8 – Two expertly dispatched spot kicks from Chelsea’s No 11. The German picked himself up off the turf to calmly squeeze home the opening goal, and clinically hammered the second into the roof of the net. AP

  SUBS: Mateo Kovacic, 6 - Brought on to replace N’Golo Kante for the final 25 minutes, probably to protect the Franchman who was on a booking with Chelsea in cruise control, although Kovacic subsequently picked up one of his own. EPA

  Olivier Giroud, 6 - Looked certain to make it 4-0 when he was threaded through on goal, but his poked effort was met by a smart save from Alfred Gomis and a bemused smile from the striker, who also placed his last-gasp header just wide. AP

  Emerson, 6 - The last man to be introduced in a triple-change, he picked up where Ben Chilwell left off in an energetic performance on the left. Reuters

  Antonio Rudiger, 6 - Came off the bench for only his second appearance of the season when he replaced the impressive Thiago Silva. Not the most strenuous circumstances, but he looked cool in possession as he calmly worked the ball out to the flanks. PA

  Callum Hudson-Odoi, N/A - Replaced Hakim Ziyech as Chelsa refused to relent with little under 15 minutes to play, but he didn’t see all that much of the ball until the final moments. Reuters

Timo Werner scored two penalties as Chelsea powered to a 3-0 win against 10-man Rennes in the Champions League.

Werner netted twice before half-time at Stamford Bridge after Rennes defender Dalbert conceded both penalties.

Dalbert was sent off after the second and Chelsea made the most of their advantage to score again through Tammy Abraham early in the second half.

Frank Lampard's side are top of Group E with seven points after three games and look well set to qualify for the last 16.

Chelsea have started a Champions League campaign with three consecutive clean-sheets in the group stage for the first time since 2009-10.

As well as keeping five successive clean-sheets in all competitions for the first time in 10 years, banishing the defensive problems that ailed them earlier this season, the Blues have scored 10 goals in their last three games.

The combination of a well-drilled defence and a potent attack is a welcome sight for Lampard, who has been working overtime to find the right formula after spending over £200 million ($259 million) on new signings in the close-season.

Chelsea are unbeaten in seven games in all competitions and Lampard's only concern was the absence of Kai Havertz, who was left out of the squad after going into self-isolation following a positive coronavirus test.
