Joelinton - 6, Was a real handful for Tyrone Mings and ran the channels well, but his decision making in front of goal was poor. Reuters

Ryan Fraser - 6, Hit a decent strike early on but failed to produce much after that – though he did show more intent in the second half than he had in the first. Reuters

Dwight Gayle - 5, The forward was anonymous for large periods of the game as he didn’t get much service, but did try to make things happen when he got it. Reuters

SUBS: Jacob Murphy (Fraser 79’) – N/R, Hit the crossbar having carved out an opportunity for himself well and assisted the equaliser with a great cross. Reuters

Javier Manquillo (Krafth 83’) – N/R, Performed fairly well but will be disappointed that the cross for the goal came from his side. PA

Andy Carroll (Hayden 89’) – N/R, Fought brilliantly and won some good headers, helping his side grab a point right at the end of the game. Reuters

Ezri Konsa - 7, His positional play was brilliant, while he helped his centre-back partner deal with Joelinton, getting a good block in to deny the Brazilian. Reuters

Tyrone Mings - 6, Had a few shaky moments as he struggled to deal with Joelinton, but it was a committed performance. Booked for a foul on the Brazilian. Reuters

Matt Targett - 8, Defended fairly well throughout and got a couple of threatening balls into the Newcastle box, with one of those leading to Villa’s goal. Reuters

John McGinn - 6, Was always willing to receive the ball and tried to make things happen, but couldn’t quite provide the end product needed. Did well with his defensive work. Booked for a foul on Fraser. Reuters

Douglas Luiz - 5, Did the basics well for large periods of the game but was beaten in the air by Lascelles in the dying moments. Almost scored with an audacious effort. Reuters

Jacob Ramsey - 5, Was positive with the ball at his feet but rarely showed the cutting edge that was needed. AP

Bertrand Traore - 5, Had a few moments where it looked as though he may cause Dummett problems, but the winger was forced off early after a collision with the advertising boards. AFP

Ollie Watkins - 6, The striker was anonymous for large periods of the game but it is his header flicking off Clark that got Villa’s only goal of the game. Reuters

Trezeguet - 5, Another Villa player who showed commitment throughout their time on the pitch, even if things didn’t always work out for the Egyptian. Forced a decent save from Dubravka. Reuters

SUBS: Anwar El Ghazi (Traore 21’) - 5, Tried to make things happen but wasn’t precise enough with some of his passing and made poor decisions at times. PA

Morgan Sanson (Ramsey 59’) - 6, Brought a bit of extra life to Villa’s play and showed some good quality on the ball. Booked for a foul on Fraser. Reuters

Ross Barkley (Trezeguet 67’) - 6, Wasn’t afraid to get on the ball and made some intelligent passes. Reuters

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles struck deep into added time to cancel out an 86th minute own goal by Ciaran Clarke and secure a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa in their Premier League clash.

The result leaves struggling Newcastle in 16th place on 28 points from 28 games, two points above the relegation zone. Villa are ninth on 41 points from 27 matches.

In a pedestrian encounter, Newcastle's attacks were limited to firing aimless balls into the box that were easily dealt with by the Villa rearguard, leaving record signing Joelinton without any supply to work with.

Fortunately for the Magpies the visitors were equally poor, barely managing to threaten in a dull game that only burst into life in the final 10 minutes.

Newcastle substitute Jacob Murphy came off the bench to replace Ryan Fraser in the 79th, and four minutes later he cut on to his right foot and smacked a shot off the crossbar.

It was to prove a costly miss as Villa striker Ollie Watkins latched on to a Matt Targett cross three minutes later and his header deflected off Clarke into the net.

Knowing defeat would leave them perilously close to sliding into the relegation zone, Newcastle poured forward in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence was rewarded when Lascelles popped up to head home Murphy's cross at the near post in the fourth minute of stoppage time to grab a valuable point.
