Joe Gomez makes the cut for Liverpool over busy festive period

Goalkeeper: Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace) – A string of fine saves earned Crystal Palace a point at Southampton and made it a fine Christmas for Roy Hodgson’s team. AFP

Centre midfield: Jorginho (Chelsea) – Came on to change the game against Arsenal. Scored the equaliser as Frank Lampard’s first-half switch was rewarded. AFP

Centre midfield: Aaron Mooy (Brighton) – Opened his Brighton account in brilliant fashion against Bournemouth. Impressive and influential even before scoring. Reuters

Left midfield: Demarai Gray (Leicester City) – Showed character and quality to recover from his missed penalty to score Leicester’s winner at West Ham. AP

Striker: Troy Deeney (Watford) – The captain’s crucial brace helped 10-man Watford beat Aston Villa to make it seven points from their last three games. Reuters

Striker: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton) – Flourishing under Carlo Ancelotti, the striker made it three goals in two games for the new manager and consecutive wins. Getty

Two defeats in three days, at Crystal Palace and home to a Leicester second string, ensured a miserable Christmas for West Ham fans.

There was even less cheer for manager Manuel Pellegrini as the poor results on the back of an alarming slump cost him his job.

Watford fans enjoyed Christmas with another home win, seeing off relegation rivals Aston Villa with a brace of goals from Troy Deeney, justifying his position in the team of the week.

Liverpool march on relentlessly, while Manchester United's frustrating inconsistency saw them bounce back from the Watford defeat to record wins against Newcastle and at Burnley.
