Man United, Liverpool and Hull City pack Best XI: PL Team of the Week

Richard Jolly

  • Arabic

• More: Premier League Week 1 scores, round-up

It was an impressive start for Manchester United, landing Jose Mourinho two in the team. Liverpool's sensational attacking display against Arsenal earned them two spots, too. Not particularly surprsing, either of those. But Hull landing two as they trumped the champions? That would have been unexpected. Richard Jolly names his best XI.

Goalkeeper

Maarten Stekelenburg (Everton)

• Manager Ronald Koeman called his compatriot’s save from Spurs striker Vincent Janssen “incredible”. It earned a point.

• More: Richard Jolly on Maarten Stekelenburg's big debut

Right-back

Kyle Naughton (Swansea)

• Secure defensively and energetic going forward as Swansea kept a clean sheet and won 1-0 away at promoted Burnley.

Centre-back

Eric Bailly (Manchester United)

• Brought pace, power and competitive spirit to the United defence in an auspicious debut against Bournemouth.

Centre-back

Jake Livermore (Hull)

• A midfielder deputising in defence, Livermore was one of the heroes of relegation favourites Hull’s shock win over champions Leicester.

Left-back

Jonny Evans (West Brom)

• A centre-back by trade, but both Northern Ireland and West Brom know Evans is a capable left-back, too. He showed it at Crystal Palace.

Right midfield

Robert Snodgrass (Hull)

• Missed most of Hull’s previous Premier League campaign with injury. Began this with a wonderful half-volley to beat Leicester.

Centre midfield

Fernandinho (Manchester City)

• The Brazilian adapted quickly to Pep Guardiola’s tactics as he was City’s best player in the 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

Centre midfield

Adam Lallana (Liverpool)

• Often criticised for his lack of goals, he scored a crucial one to put Liverpool ahead at the Emirates Stadium in their 4-3 triumph.

Left midfield

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

• Provided two stunning goals, a free kick and a deft first-time finish, and the inspiration in Liverpool’s win at Arsenal.

• More: 'Genius' of Coutinho lifts Liverpool to opening win

Striker

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United)

• Marked his Premier League bow with a crisp strike at Bournemouth to keep up his record of scoring on debuts.

• More: The stars all shine, and a new United era begins with a win

Striker

Alvaro Negredo (Middlesbrough)

• The Spaniard reinforced the impression his signing is a coup with an early goal in the 1-1 draw against Stoke.
