Julian Nagelsmann - The favourite to succeed Mourinho at Tottenham should the Portuguese be shown the door. Spurs got a taste of the German coach's credentials when watching his RB Leipzig dismantle them 4-0 on aggregate in last season's Champions League. Steven Gerrard - The former Liverpool midfielder, 40, has just guided Rangers to a first Scottish Premier League title in his third season in charge, a stunning achievement considering the Glasgow club's recent history. Brendan Rodgers - The Northern Irishman, 48, has restored his reputation as an elite Premier League manager at Leicester City after questions over his capabilities following Liverpool's spectacular implosion in the 2014 title race. Guided the Foxes to a fifth-placed finish last season and they are on course for a top-four finish in 2020/21. Massimiliano Allegri - It seems improbable a man of Allegri's pedigree has been left on the shelf for the past two years. The Italian tactician has been linked with multiple clubs since leaving Juventus in 2019 soon after clinching his fifth straight Serie A title in charge of the Turin giants. Spurs have had a United Nations gallery of managers over the years but never an Italian. Now could be the time to pick the brains of one of Europe's most astute and respected coaches. AP file

Jose Mourinho 17-month tenure in charge at Tottenham Hotspur ended on Monday with the club announcing they had sacked the Portuguese.

Mourinho, 58, replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs head coach in November 2019 but has struggled to get the best out of a squad that reached the 2019 Champions League final.

Spurs are currently seventh in the Premier League and in danger of missing out on a top-four finish. They were knocked out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage last month. Mourinho's last match in charge was Friday's 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton.

The North London club contest Sunday's League Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley hoping to clinch a first trophy since 2008.
