Five best and five worst Burnley kits

We look back at 30 years of team strips from current Premier League clubs, with the Clarets next on the catwalk

  BURNLEY BEST: 5) 2016/17 away: A nice flip on the usual claret and light blue home colours and a common trick they’ve used for their away strip over the years. A quality effort matched by a memorable season when Burnley clinched the Championship title and a place back in the top-flight. Getty

  4) 2019/20 away: Kit manufacturers Umbro have nailed this season's away kit for Burnley. Top to bottom light blue livened up by darker flashes across the chest. Simple but effective. Getty

  3) 2013/14 away: an historic season for the team when promotion back to the top-flight for the first time was sealed since 1976, spearheaded by Danny Ings' 21 goals and achieved whilst parading this stunner around the country. White shirt with claret trim, finished off by the striped socks of the same colours. Nice from Puma once again. Getty

  2)1991/93 home: Right, I don’t care what the haters think about this. YOU’RE WRONG! I like this effort from Ribero. Classic shirt colours with a twist: Blue flashes on the claret, white flashes on the blue. Also a historic season when Burnley won [what was then] the Fourth Division to become only the second team, after Wolves, to have been champions of all four divisions of the Football League. Getty

  1) 2018/19 away: A thing of beauty. The silver trim, sponsors and honeycomb effect on the shirt looks fantastic in a season where the club enjoyed European competition for the first time in 51 years - albeit only reaching the Europa League play-off stage. Getty

  WORST: 5) 1998/99 away: The Turf Moor club have tried a few stabs at yellow over the years, with none coming off. Adidas were certainly consistent when it came to Burnley away shirts in this period and this nauseous three-striped top maintained their low standards. Getty

  4) 1991-93 away: Despite the bright all-yellow strip, it still feels a spectacularly dull affair crying out for some imagination. A design knocked up on the hoof by someone with more important things on their mind. Getty

  3) 1997/98 away: the 1990’s were certainly a tough time for supporters wanting to sport the latest away kit. This actually threatens to be a decent number with the light blue stripes at the top and dark trim, which, for some unknown reason, Adidas then decide to fade away into pixelated white nothingness.   2) 1993/94 away: The classy away kits of future Premier League years certainly feel a long way off here. Promotion to the second tier may have been earned via the play-offs, but the less said about this awful half-and-half turquoise and dark blue design the better. Getty

  1) 1996/97 home: a disastrous move away from Burnley’s classic home design. This jester’s outfit from Adidas is a regular high-performer in fan polls for Burnley’s worst kits - and it’s easy to see why. Getty

Premier League clubs are back in training after the coronavirus-enforced lockdown on the current season.

And, as we edge closer to a possible return to action next month, we take a look back on 30 years of football kits from the current 20 top-flight English clubs.

There have been some stunning works of wonder over the years ... as well as truly heinous crimes committed in the name of sporting fashion.
