Premier League predictions: Arsenal and Man City all square, Liverpool beat in-form Bournemouth

  • English
  • Arabic

Saturday: Nottingham Forest v Brighton (4.30pm UAE)

Third-place Forest, who had won seven of their last eight matches, were brought back down to earth with a hefty bump last week when they were smashed 5-0 at Bournemouth.

Brighton's hopes of winning for a third consecutive match were ended when they lost at home to West Ham United, which leaves them eighth in the table.

Prediction: Forest 2 Brighton 1

Bournemouth v Liverpool (7pm)

Bournemouth's stunning demolition of Forest means they are now 11 games undefeated and are seventh in the standings, just one point behind Manchester City in fourth.

Liverpool's lead at the top of the league is now six points with a game in hand after they brushed aside Ipswich Town 4-1 at Anfield, which included a double from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scoring his 19th league goal of the campaign.

Prediction: Bournemouth 1 Liverpool 2

Everton v Leicester City (7pm)

Everton made it two wins on the spin under returning manager David Moyes when they battled to a narrow victory over Brighton, lifting them seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Leicester managed to end of miserable run of seven consecutive losses by winning away to Tottenham Hotspur and climbing out of the bottom three, albeit only by a point.

Prediction: Everton 1 Leicester 0

Ipswich v Southampton (7pm)

Second-bottom takes on bottom at Portman Road, although Southampton are 10 points behind their opponents. Ipswich's defeat at Liverpool was their third on the trot but they are only one point shy of safety.

Southampton's home defeat to Newcastle means they have still only accrued six points after winning once in 23 games and they are 11 points behind fourth-bottom Leicester.

Prediction: Ipswich 3 Southampton 1

Newcastle United v Fulham (7pm)

Fifth-placed Newcastle returned to winning ways after their 4-1 humbling at home by Bournemouth by easing to a 3-1 victory at bottom club Southampton, with striker Alexander Isak scoring twice, taking his league tally for the season to 17.

Fulham were beaten 1-0 at home by Manchester United meaning the Cottagers have managed just one win in five games, leaving them 10th in the table.

Prediction: Newcastle 2 Fulham 0

Wolves v Aston Villa (9.30pm)

Third-bottom Wolves are looking to avoid a fifth defeat in a row in this Midlands derby after losing 1-0 at home to Arsenal last week.

Villa go into the game on a high having qualified for the Uefa Champions League last 16 after beating Celtic on Wednesday night. The have also gone five Premier League games unbeaten, although three of those were draws.

Prediction: Wolves 1 Villa 2

Sunday: Brentford v Spurs (6pm)

Brentford edged to a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace last week – only their second away win of the season – but the Bees have yet to record two consecutive victories this season and are in 11th place.

Tottenham's miserable run goes on with Ange Postecoglou's side now having lost four in a row following their home defeat by Leicester and have won just once in 11 league games.

Prediction: Brentford 1 Spurs 1

Manchester United v Crystal Palace (6pm)

A deflected strike from defender Lisandro Martinez earned United all three points at Fulham last time out and they are up to 12th in the table after leapfrogging Palace.

The Eagles had lost just once in 11 games ahead of last week's defeat at home by Brentford, having turned around their season following a tricky start.

Prediction: United 2 Palace 1

Arsenal v Manchester City (8.30pm)

Second versus fourth at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal enjoy a six-point advantage over City and produced a battling performance to win at Wolves last week thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's second-half goal

City's 3-1 win over Chelsea continued their recent improvement in league form, which has seen them go unbeaten in five games, their last defeat coming at Aston Villa on December 21.

Prediction: Arsenal 1 Man City 1

Tuesday: Chelsea v West Ham (midnight)

Chelsea's slump in form continued with defeat at the Etihad Stadium last weekend and Ezno Maresca's side have dropped down to sixth after winning just once in seven matches

West Ham earned a hard-fought draw at Aston Villa last week with new manager Graham Potter having taken four points from a possible nine since he took over.

Prediction: Chelsea 2 West Ham 1

What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Best advice you’ve ever been given: If you have a dream, you have to believe it, then you will see it.

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times

If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.

A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.

The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.

In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.

The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.

Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.

Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.

“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.

The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.

“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.

“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”

Key findings of Jenkins report
  • Founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al Banna, "accepted the political utility of violence"
  • Views of key Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, Sayyid Qutb, have “consistently been understood” as permitting “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” and “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
  • Muslim Brotherhood at all levels has repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians.
  • Laying out the report in the House of Commons, David Cameron told MPs: "The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism."

Cultural fiesta

What: The Al Burda Festival
When: November 14 (from 10am)
Where: Warehouse421,  Abu Dhabi
The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. There will also be discussions on subjects including ‘Who is the Audience for Islamic Art?’ and ‘New Markets for Islamic Design.’ A live performance from Kuwaiti guitarist Yousif Yaseen should be one of the highlights of the day.
