TOTTENHAM RATINGS: Made a brilliant save to deny Jackson and was unlucky to be beaten after palming Palmer’s penalty onto the post. Rushed out superbly on a few occasions to reach dangerous balls through, then did superbly to stop Cucurella but was left helpless by Jackson as he scored a hat-trick. PAShow less

Played some wayward passes early on, including a shocker that resulted in Jackson’s early chance, but defended tirelessly and delivered some brilliant late free-kicks that caused havoc in Chelsea’s box. EPAShow less

Hit the strike that went in off Colwill for the opening goal and put in some good work off the ball, notably dispossessing Fernandez for a Spurs burst forward. AP

Played a superb pass to start the move for the opener and had some more nice moments on the ball before being forced off through injury in the first half. AP

Brennan Johnson 6/10

Can consider himself unlucky, having seen Son’s goal from his perfectly weighted pass ruled out for a marginal offside before then being substituted following Romero’s red card. EPA

Son Heung-min 7/10

Had a clinically taken goal ruled out after straying offside by the finest of margins. Wasn’t offered much service after his side saw red but was a willing worker for the team and was unlucky to see his shot saved late on. ReutersShow less

SUBS:(Johnson, 34’) Came on for his first minutes of the season following Romero’s red card and made an outstanding intervention to cut out Sterling’s ball for Jackson. Battled in the middle well at times and picked out some nice passes. Had a brilliant goal ruled out because Jackson was marginally offside, although he wasn’t worried for too long as the penalty was awarded in the same passage of play. EPAShow less

Hit a shot harmlessly off target but was the man on the receiving end of Romero’s tackle for the penalty. Was caught on the ball by Kulusevski in a dangerous area. EPA

Cole Palmer 9/10

Provided a composed presence while many of his teammates looked panicked in the early stages, which was shown when he scored Chelsea’s equaliser from the penalty spot. Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of returning to the top of the Premier League table were dashed in extraordinary fashion as they went down 4-1 at home to Chelsea on Monday in a frenetic London derby that they completed with nine men.

A Nicolas Jackson hat-trick made it a triumphant return to Spurs for Mauricio Pochettino as he earned the biggest result of his short Chelsea tenure, though few could have imagined how it would be achieved on a mind-boggling night in north London.

Previously unbeaten Tottenham went ahead after six minutes thanks to Dejan Kulusevski's deflected shot and minutes later had a second scored by Son Heung-min ruled out for offside.

But in scenes reminiscent of the infamous Battle of the Bridge in 2016 when Chelsea scuppered the title hopes of Pochettino's Tottenham side, the hosts' night unravelled.

Cristian Romero was sent off after a VAR check for a dangerous tackle on Enzo Fernandez that resulted in a penalty scored by Cole Palmer and Spurs then lost two players, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, to injury.

Destiny Udogie was shown a second yellow card 10 minutes after the break, leaving the hosts trying to hang on for a point.

Chelsea eventually made their numerical advantage count as Jackson put them ahead from close range in the 75th minute, the goal standing after yet another VAR check for offside.

Tottenham had an equaliser by substitute Eric Dier ruled out for offside and Son saw an effort saved in stoppage time by Robert Sanchez before Jackson wrapped it up with two added-time efforts in front of the joyful Chelsea fans.

A first league defeat for Ange Postecoglou leaves Spurs in second place with 26 points from 11 games, one behind champions Manchester City. Chelsea's fourth win of the season moved them up to 10th with 15 points.
