Floyd Mayweather Jr says he is ‘90 per cent’ set for ring return to face UFC’s Conor McGregor

LONDON // Floyd Mayweather Jr broke his silence regarding a potential fight with Conor McGregor by revealing he is “90 per cent” likely to face him if he returns to the ring because it is “the only fight that makes sense”.

UFC lightweight champion McGregor, who has a licence to box in California, said earlier this week he has signed a contract to fight Mayweather and awaits the American’s response.

Mayweather had refused to respond in the build-up to Saturday’s fight between Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh but after his fighter’s third-round knockout victory sounded increasingly confident of fighting this year.

The 40-year-old American has remained inactive since he outpointed Andre Berto in September 2015. Few expected he would retire with a record of 49 victories, level with Rocky Marciano, and in the past 12 months there has been increasing speculation regarding a match-up with Ireland’s McGregor.

Asked of his personal plans, Mayweather responded: “If I do fight, there’s a 90 per cent chance it’s against Conor McGregor

“When I get back to the US I’ll call Al [Haymon, Mayweather’s adviser] and see our next move. There’s no rush.

“The only fight that makes sense to me is the McGregor fight. I guess I have one more obstacle that I have to get over.

“We have to give the people what they want to see. The fans demand that fight; we have to give them what they want to see to make them happy.

"I think this year I'll be back at No 1 in Forbes' [list of athletes' net worth], in a matter of time."

Davis, 22, had been the recipient of both encouragement and instructions from Mayweather, who was ringside at London’s Copper Box Arena to watch his fighter make the first defence of his IBF super-featherweight title.

Mayweather also spoke of the time he had spent in the gym alongside Davis, who though impressive he insists is still “not at 100 per cent”.

“It’s possible but we don’t want to rush,” he said when asked if the potential McGregor fight could be made quickly.

“When we make a move it’s going to be huge. When Floyd Mayweather fights it’s history.

“This kid [Davis] had me go to the gym, sparring a little bit. When it’s time to do what I have to I’ll look tremendous, and sharp.”

What is Folia?

Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.

Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."

Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.

In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".

There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.

While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
