Tom Daley and James Denny took the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games men’s synchronised 10-metre platform on Friday night after a near-perfect final dive.
With just four pairs in the competition, only two medals were awarded at Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool and the English duo, a new partnership, had looked out of contention entering the sixth dive.
Daley and Denny, both 20, had just seven days of training together after deciding to enter last week.
They finished with a forward four-and-a-half somersault which scored 95.46 to record a total of 399.36 but it was not enough to overhaul Australia’s Matthew Mitcham and Domonic Bedggood, who won with a total of 399.54.
Malaysia’s Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yiwei were third.
Tom Daley told BBC One: “We didn’t know what to expect. We only started training for the first time last Friday and have only had three sessions, so I am really happy with the way it went.
“For the last dive I said give it everything because anything can happen. We managed to do it and James did a great job.
“Considering we went to nearly 400 points with just one good dive I think we will go into the European Championships in the synchronised. With more training under our belts we could go quite far.”
Claudia Fragapane became the first Englishwoman to win four golds at a single Commonwealth Games in 84 years after she claimed the individual floor title at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro.
She produced a strong routine that was full of expression to score 14.541 and take the title, which will add to her individual all-around, vault and team success.
The 1.35-metre Fragapane’s final appearance in the floor showpiece did not disappoint as she saw off the challenge of Australia’s Lauren Mitchell who claimed silver while Canada’s Ellie Black won bronze.
Fragapane, 16, was the sixth gymnast to compete and moved into a clear lead over Mitchell and Black.
Wales’ Jessica Hogg took an early lead before Mitchell moved into gold medal position. Canada’s Stefanie Merkle went second before England’s Hannah Whelan finished outside the top three.
Fragapne was next to compete and made her complex routine look easy as she stormed to the top of the standings with two gymnasts left.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Dan Purvis finished off his Games by upgrading to gold after he won a dramatic men’s parallel bars final.
Purvis, 23, produced a routine that scored 15.533 to take the title ahead of England’s Nile Wilson who won silver with 15.433, while floor, all-around and team champion Max Whitlock had to settle for bronze with 15.066.
Purvis was the last man to compete on the apparatus and his impressive routine snatched the gold from Wilson at the death with the roar of home support fully behind the popular gymnast.
The Scot revealed it was the advice of pommel horse gold medallist and teammate Dan Keatings that had spurred him on to victory.
“Dan Keatings was fantastic, he composed himself [before the pommel horse final], and I tried to repeat that today,” Purvis said.
“He said to me that he went for everything and that’s what I tried to do here today.
“I am over the moon to be honest,” Purvis said. “I didn’t expect to get gold. Just to get another medal in front of the home crowd was fantastic so I am just absolutely over the moon.”
Canada’s Scott Morgan won gold in the men’s vault final and compatriot Ellie Black won gold with a stunning routine of 14.900 in the beam final.
