Extra race added to World Cup

Talk of an eighth race being in the pipeline was confirmed yesterday with the announcement of a second six-furlong contest worth Dh3.67million.

DUBAI // Meydan is set to attract some of the world's highest-rated turf sprinters this season with the addition of an extra race, worth US$1million (Dh3.67m), to the 15th Dubai World Cup card in March. Talk of an eighth race being in the pipeline was confirmed yesterday with the announcement of a second six furlong contest, the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint, to complement the existing $2m Group One Dubai Golden Shaheen.

With the Dubai World Cup boosted from its previous purse of $6m to $10m, the total prize fund for the richest night of racing now stands at $26.25m. A six furlong straight sprint course was added to Meydan's new left-handed, 2,400m turf track at the design stage, giving Dubai Racing Club the option to introduce a turf sprint alongside what will this year be a sprint on the 1,750 metre Tapeta track situated inside the turf.

Traditionally the Golden Shaheen was staged on the now extinct dirt of the old Nad al Sheba race track, and attracted some of the best sprinters from the US. However, it could not tempt Europe and Australia's best sprint contenders, who perform on turf. That is likely to change now that trainers have the option of preparing their horses for either a turf or an all-weather sprint race at Meydan. "The highest-rated sprinters in the world are predominantly turf horses and with the rich history of the Golden Shaheen attracting the best from the USA, we will now attract the best turf sprinters in the world with the addition of Al Quoz Sprint," said Meydan board member, Malih al Basti.

July 18: It is announced that the UAE will be formed from six emirates, with a proposed constitution signed. RAK is not yet part of the agreement.

November 29:  At 5.30pm Iranian forces seize the Greater and Lesser Tunbs by force.

November 30: Despite  a power sharing agreement, Tehran takes full control of Abu Musa. 

November 31: UK officials visit all six participating Emirates to formally end the Trucial States treaties

December 2: 11am, Dubai. New Supreme Council formally elects Sheikh Zayed as President. Treaty of Friendship signed with the UK. 11.30am. Flag raising ceremony at Union House and Al Manhal Palace in Abu Dhabi witnessed by Sheikh Khalifa, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

December 6: Arab League formally admits the UAE. The first British Ambassador presents his credentials to Sheikh Zayed.

December 9: UAE joins the United Nations.

One in nine do not have enough to eat

Created in 1961, the World Food Programme is pledged to fight hunger worldwide as well as providing emergency food assistance in a crisis.

One of the organisation’s goals is the Zero Hunger Pledge, adopted by the international community in 2015 as one of the 17 Sustainable Goals for Sustainable Development, to end world hunger by 2030.

The WFP, a branch of the United Nations, is funded by voluntary donations from governments, businesses and private donations.

Almost two thirds of its operations currently take place in conflict zones, where it is calculated that people are more than three times likely to suffer from malnutrition than in peaceful countries.

It is currently estimated that one in nine people globally do not have enough to eat.

On any one day, the WFP estimates that it has 5,000 lorries, 20 ships and 70 aircraft on the move.

Outside emergencies, the WFP provides school meals to up to 25 million children in 63 countries, while working with communities to improve nutrition. Where possible, it buys supplies from developing countries to cut down transport cost and boost local economies.

Labour dispute

The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested.
