Everton, Villa and Wigan through but Pompey held at home

Everton, last year's FA Cup runners-up, were made to battle hard for their place in the fourth round after two late goals gave them a 3-1 win over League One team Carlisle yesterday. James Vaughan gave the Toffees a 12th-minute lead but Adam Clayton's strike went in off Carlisle teammate Kevan Hurst to level matters. Tim Cahill grabbed a crucial close-range strike in the 82nd minute before Leighton Baines made the game safe from the spot in the final minute.

Premier League strugglers Portsmouth were taken to a replay by Championship side Coventry after a 1-1 draw. A bad week was made worse for financially-stricken Pompey when David Bell lashed the Sky Blues ahead on the half-hour. But Tommy Smith's cross allowed Kevin-Prince Boateng to head his side level in first-half stoppage time. Aston Villa and Wigan both won their all-Premier League ties.

Villa beat Blackburn 3-1 in a game in which the two sides made a combined 16 changes to their starting line-ups. Nathan Delfouneso and Carlos Cuellar put Villa 2-0 up either side of David Dunn's penalty miss for Blackburn. Rovers then had El-Hadji Diouf sent off in the 42nd minute before Nikola Kalinic pulled a goal back. But John Carew's late penalty sealed the win for the home team. Charles N'Zogbia's introduction at half-time turned Wigan's fortunes around as they beat Hull 4-1.

Geovanni's free-kick gave the visitors the lead before N'Zogbia scored twice and set-up a goal for James McCarthy. Scott Sinclair added the fourth in the last minute. Niko Kranjcar struck twice for Tottenham in their 4-0 win over Peterborough while Steven Fletcher's goal secured Burnley a 2-1 win over MK Dons. Bobby Zamora's 15th-minute strike earned Fulham a 1-0 victory against Swindon. Managerless Bolton hammered Lincoln 4-0, with all the goals coming after the break. The biggest winners of the day were Preston, who Colchester 7-0, with Jon Parkin grabbing a hat-trick. * PA Sport
