Everton manager Roberto Martinez was in no doubt the experience of Samuel Eto’o had shone through as the striker scored a late equaliser for the Toffees in their 1-1 Europa League draw at FK Krasnodar.
The Merseyside outfit, who are competing in Europe for the first time since 2009/10, were outplayed by their Russian opponents for much of the Group H contest at the Kuban Stadium.
But they emerged from it with a point after Eto’o was on hand to provide a close-range, left-foot finish from Leighton Baines’ cross in the 82nd minute, cancelling out a 43rd-minute Ari strike that had been teed up by a mistake from Phil Jagielka.

Former Cameroon international Eto’o has not only had a taste of Russian football before, having played for Anzhi Makhachkala, but is also very much a seasoned campaigner in European competition, with three Champions League winner’s medals to his name.
And regarding the 33-year-old former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea player who Everton signed over the summer, Martinez said: “Today was a bit of an unknown and we needed the experience.
“Samuel was waiting for that moment, was very composed, he got in good pockets of space and the finish was of the highest quality. I was delighted for him.
“The big thing about Samuel Eto’o is experience in European competition, and if anyone was going to have a chance and score a goal, it was going to be him.
“That was his role today - he used his experience and know-how. He came up with the goal and that is why he proved his value.
“I couldn’t be prouder of his performance in terms of showing how to wait for your moment and then using it.”
Martinez felt his side had showed great character to secure an “incredible result” and believes they will learn a lot from the game.
The Spaniard said: “It gave us a lot of experience. It has been a very good lesson for us.
“Krasnodar played really well. But I think in the end we deserved it. I was delighted with the character that we showed.”
He added: “Maybe a draw is a fair result, but Krasnodar did have a lot of chances they couldn’t take and it could have been a different story.”
Everton now have four points from two Group H games and remain top of the pool.
Krasnodar and Lille have two points apiece, while Wolfsburg, who Everton beat 4-1 at home last month, have one.
Krasnodar boss Oleg Kononov was frustrated that his players could not make more of their first-half superiority, but declared himself satisfied overall.
“We tried to attack,” Kononov said.
“We were successful with this in the first half - but we should have scored more.
“There were some wonderful chances to do that but maybe we were just unlucky. I’m satisfied with the result.”

It's up to you to go green
Nils El Accad, chief executive and owner of Organic Foods and Café, says going green is about “lifestyle and attitude” rather than a “money change”; people need to plan ahead to fill water bottles in advance and take their own bags to the supermarket, he says.
“People always want someone else to do the work; it doesn’t work like that,” he adds. “The first step: you have to consciously make that decision and change.”
When he gets a takeaway, says Mr El Accad, he takes his own glass jars instead of accepting disposable aluminium containers, paper napkins and plastic tubs, cutlery and bags from restaurants.
He also plants his own crops and herbs at home and at the Sheikh Zayed store, from basil and rosemary to beans, squashes and papayas. “If you’re going to water anything, better it be tomatoes and cucumbers, something edible, than grass,” he says.
“All this throwaway plastic - cups, bottles, forks - has to go first,” says Mr El Accad, who has banned all disposable straws, whether plastic or even paper, from the café chain.
One of the latest changes he has implemented at his stores is to offer refills of liquid laundry detergent, to save plastic. The two brands Organic Foods stocks, Organic Larder and Sonnett, are both “triple-certified - you could eat the product”.
The Organic Larder detergent will soon be delivered in 200-litre metal oil drums before being decanted into 20-litre containers in-store.
Customers can refill their bottles at least 30 times before they start to degrade, he says. Organic Larder costs Dh35.75 for one litre and Dh62 for 2.75 litres and refills will cost 15 to 20 per cent less, Mr El Accad says.
But while there are savings to be had, going green tends to come with upfront costs and extra work and planning. Are we ready to refill bottles rather than throw them away? “You have to change,” says Mr El Accad. “I can only make it available.”
Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
