There is something amiss in Hong Kong. As Sha Tin Racecourse gears up for its well-regarded four Group 1 races this morning, participants are dropping out like flies.
Cirrus Des Aigles was withdrawn from the Hong Kong Cup on Friday after picking up a tendon injury in his left fore.
To lose one international star is unfortunate, but to lose two might appear like carelessness. Sea Moon, Prince Khalid Abdullah's great hope for the Hong Kong Vase, was found with a blood abnormality and was scratched from taking on Sheikh Fahad Al Thani's Dunaden tomorrow.
Christophe Lemaire, who is set to ride Bayrir in the 12-furlong contest, has picked up a nasty dose of influenza and could also miss out.
And it does not end there. Lemaire's touch-and-go status pales in comparison to that of Ambitious Dragon, Hong Kong's dual horse of the year, who faces a race against time to make the line-up to the Hong Kong Mile.
Ambitious Dragon, who was favourite for the Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night, was found lame in his right leg today.
A decision will be made this morning about whether Tony Millard's charge will take part.
Sweet Orange, a Group 1 winner in the former British colony, was also withdrawn from the Hong Kong Cup, after being found lame on Friday. If Sea Moon's late defection is to the disappointment of Prince Khalid Abdullah, it is to the joy of Sheikh Fahad, as Dunaden now appears to have an excellent chance of defending his title in the Vase.
Dunaden fluffed his lines last month in his bid to become the first back-to-back Melbourne Cup winner since Makybe Diva in 2005, and Sheikh Fahad remained hopeful after Dunaden's 10th place at Flemington under Craig Williams, who is also in the saddle tomorrow.
"Obviously it is different than last year when he came here off the back of his Melbourne Cup win and this time he was disappointing there," Sheikh Fahad said.
"He had a bit of a muscle problem then and his work times since have been a couple of seconds slower than last year. However, this course and distance are ideal and we remain hopeful."

Who has lived at The Bishops Avenue?

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?
The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.
The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.
He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.
He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.
He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.

School counsellors on mental well-being
Schools counsellors in Abu Dhabi have put a number of provisions in place to help support pupils returning to the classroom next week.
Many children will resume in-person lessons for the first time in 10 months and parents previously raised concerns about the long-term effects of distance learning.
Schools leaders and counsellors said extra support will be offered to anyone that needs it. Additionally, heads of years will be on hand to offer advice or coping mechanisms to ease any concerns.
“Anxiety this time round has really spiralled, more so than from the first lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic,” said Priya Mitchell, counsellor at The British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi.
“Some have got used to being at home don’t want to go back, while others are desperate to get back.
“We have seen an increase in depressive symptoms, especially with older pupils, and self-harm is starting younger.
“It is worrying and has taught us how important it is that we prioritise mental well-being.”
Ms Mitchell said she was liaising more with heads of year so they can support and offer advice to pupils if the demand is there.
The school will also carry out mental well-being checks so they can pick up on any behavioural patterns and put interventions in place to help pupils.
At Raha International School, the well-being team has provided parents with assessment surveys to see how they can support students at home to transition back to school.
“They have created a Well-being Resource Bank that parents have access to on information on various domains of mental health for students and families,” a team member said.
“Our pastoral team have been working with students to help ease the transition and reduce anxiety that [pupils] may experience after some have been nearly a year off campus.
"Special secondary tutorial classes have also focused on preparing students for their return; going over new guidelines, expectations and daily schedules.”
