Plans for a new Twenty20 cricket league are set to be unveiled in Dubai next week. More details of the Masters Champions League (MCL), as it is known, will emerge at a launch event on Wednesday.
The shape and structure of the league, and even which players it will feature are not yet public. But it is likely to be a veterans’ league, involving in some capacity a number of high-profile former international cricketers from around the world.
One former player who is involved for certain is Dean Jones, the former Australian cricketer and current commentator.
Jones, widely regarded as one of the finest ODI batsmen of his era, has been dropping teasers on Twitter since Wednesday about the imminent launch. On Wednesday he tweeted: “Great to be back in UAE to launch MCL2020.”
Soon after he tweeted: “Huge announcement on June 3 for UAE.” On Thursday afternoon, he revealed the location of the launch news conference, posting a picture of the Burj Al Arab: “I wonder where the MCL2020 press conference on June 3 is going to be.”
The National understands that the league has been given approval by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), which gives it official status in the eyes of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well.
In theory that status should ease the way for a number of former cricketers to be involved, many of them still well-known because of their continued involvement in the game as coaches or commentators.
The development comes hot on the heels of speculation in Australia that Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar are also planning a Twenty20 event for retired international players that would involve two teams playing each other in a series of exhibition matches.
That league, reportedly known as the Cricket All-Stars League, is planning to organise 15 matches around the world in a 3-4 year period. Interestingly, one of the potential venues for the league according to reports is the UAE.
Neither Tendulkar or Warne has said anything about the venture publicly, though in January Warne tweeted “Sachin & I have an exciting announcement soon.”
