Dubai // David O'Leary, Al Ahli's coach, chose to skip the official post-match press conference last night after his side were demolished 5-1 by Al Jazira, and a league official said he would be fined for failing to appear.
Down in the carpark, however, the Irishman who formerly led the Premier League sides Leeds United and Aston Villa seemed happy to talk to a reporter who found him as he was getting into a car for the ride back to Dubai.
O'Leary's Ahli team had surged into third place in the Pro League in December but have fallen off of late, suffering draws with the small clubs Al Dhafra and Kalba and defeats to Al Wasl and Jazira in their past four league matches.
The game at Jazira, the league leaders, was 0-0 after 45 minutes, but Ahli melted after Matias Delgado of the home side got the first goal, in the 53rd minute.
O'Leary said he knows what is wrong with Ahli - last night it was the scythe that has cut down his centre-back corps, including the Italian Fabio Cannavaro - and he is confident he can turn the team round if he is allowed to complete the next two years of his three-year contract.
"We fell apart," he said. "The best team won the second half.
"We're struggling. We're losing a lot of centre-backs. We've got injuries. Fabio is hurt, and we've got three other centre-backs hurt. The lad [Khalid Mohammed] who had to come off at half time was our last one. We had nobody else. He got hurt; he twisted his ankle. We had to put in a lad [Ahmed Salem] who doesn't play there, and the second half we looked very vulnerable because of that. And as well, the second half, a few players, I won't say who here, I've said it in the dressing room, just didn't perform for us.
"The one thing we didn't need, if anything, was to lose a player in the centre-back position. When you come to Al Jazira, that's one position you don't want to be losing players. We had nobody else."
