Tadej Pogacar settles for third place on Vuelta a Espana Stage 2 but increases overall lead

Tadej Pogacar came home in third place on Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana but increased his overall lead in the general classification.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider was beaten in a sprint finish with Grand Tour debutant Matt Brennan (Visma-Lease a Bike) claiming the win ahead of Pau Miquel (Bahrain Victorious) after a thrilling finale into Manosque after a 214km ride from Monaco.

Five-time Tour de France champion Pogacar keeps hold of the leader's red jersey he claimed after winning the Stage 1 time-trial by just nine hundredths of a second on Saturday.

The Slovenian – looking to complete a clean-sweep of Grand Tour races by winning in Spain – now enjoys a nine-second lead over Wout van Aert (Visma – Lease a Bike), who moved up six spots, with teammate Brennan third in the overall standings a further second back.

Sitting in fourth place is Leo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM), who moved up two spots, and is now 12 seconds back, with Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) now up to fifth, a further two seconds behind.

“We started off with the ambition of trying to get Wout in the red jersey today, and we said there's a nice opportunity to attack in the final, and Wout was really keen to do that,” said 21-year-old British rider Brennan, who takes control of the Best Young Rider's white jersey.

“So we had that plan, and I was always going to be in the background to sprint in case that sat up.

“That's exactly what happened; the guys in front sat up, Christophe [Laporte] did a great job of guiding me all the way through the hecticness of that, and I'm super happy to finish it off.

“Hopefully it's not the last one, because it's nice. Again, the boys worked all day really well, really gave it 100 per cent and believed in both of us so we could achieve something successful today. I'm really happy to start off this way.”

Ethan Hayter (Soudal-QuickStep) was part of a small early breakaway and looked destined to take the overall lead when he won the final intermediate sprint for six bonus seconds.

But as the race funnelled into Manosque, he found himself badly positioned towards the back of the stretched-out peloton.

With around 1.5km remaining it appeared that Pogacar and Van Aert would fight it out for the stage victory but Pogacar ‌stepped off the gas and it was Van Aert's unheralded teammate Brennan who seized the moment ‌to claim his biggest career win.

Monday takes the riders into the French Pyrenees with a mountain finish in Font Romeu near the Spanish border.
