MUMBAI INDIANS RATINGS: Rohit Sharma – 5. Got the IPL campaign off to a fine start with a lovely cover drive off the first ball, but his stay was only brief. Sportzpics for BCCI

Quinton de Kock – 7. Took his compatriot Ngidi apart, and got the team off to a brisk start with 33 from 20 balls. Sportzpics for BCCI

Suryakumar Yadav – 5. Looked rusty as he made a slow 17 from 16 balls before holing out to Deepak Chahar. Sportzpics for BCCI

Saurabh Tiwary – 7. Maybe a little over his ideal fighting weight, but hit the first six of this year’s IPL, and made 42 from 31 balls. Sportzpics for BCCI

Kieron Pollard – 5. Edged behind off Ngidi when he looked set to power Mumbai’s late-overs hitting. Sportzpics for BCCI

Hardik Pandya – 5. Looked to be ready for action with back-to-back sixes off Jadeja, but fell to a fine catch by Du Plessis when going for a third. Sportzpics for BCCI

Krunal Pandya – 5. Picked up the seemingly important wicket of Jadeja - only to then be razed by Curran. AP

James Pattinson – 7. One for 27 from his four overs represented a steady start to his unenviable job of replacing Lasith Malinga. Sportzpics for BCCI

Rahul Chahar – 7. Had to wait until his last ball for a wicket. Not helped by his fielders, as he saw Bumrah and Boult let fours go straight through them in successive deliveries. AFP

Trent Boult – 8. Sparkling with the new ball as he took one for 15 off his first three overs, but the game was gone by the time he was brought back. Sportzpics for BCCI

Jasprit Bumrah – 4. A rare off night. His no ball off the last delivery of the power play cost him 11, and got Chennai moving. He did a poor misfield, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS RATINGS: Shane Watson (left) – 4. Crunched one four off Boult then fell the next ball. Wins a point for not burning the review on his plumb lbw decision. Sportzpics for BCCI

Murali Vijay – 3. Under pressure as he broke up the successful Watson-Du Plessis opening partnership. Made just one off six balls, and should have reviewed it, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

Faf du Plessis – 9. His three boundary catches, one of which was stunning, were decisive. Then he carried his bat through the innings and hit the winning runs. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ambati Rayudu – 8. His 78 metre six off the last ball of the powerplay got Chennai moving after a sticky start. He ended with 71 off 48 balls. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja – 6. Suffered because of Hardik Pandya’s six hitting, but got his man in the end, and top-scorer Tiwary, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

Sam Curran – 8. Ten off his last over slightly spoilt his figures, which were one for 28. Took two catches, too, then played a fine cameo with the bat. Sportzpics for BCCI

MS Dhoni – 6. Only Captain Cool can fail to break sweat in these conditions. Spared a first-ball duck when DRS suggested he should not have been given out caught behind. Sportzpics for BCCI

Kedar Yadav – 5. Not required with bat or ball, and his lone contribution was to struggle as an outfielder. Sportzpics for BCCI

Piyush Chawla – 8. Picked up the first wicket – the big one, of Rohit. Finished with one for 21, which was a fine return. Sportzpics for BCCI

Deepak Chahar – 6. Two for 32 from his four, including a fine last over, was a decent effort. But he loses a point for a shock of a misfield off Ngidi. Sportzpics for BCCI

Lungi Ngidi – 6. A nightmare start, followed by a dream finish. The turnaround started with a lucky wicket, when he strangled Krunal Pandya down the leg-side. Sportzpics for BCCI

Faf du Plessis took three catches and hit a sparkling fifty to help Chennai Super Kings defeat Mumnbai Indians in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Du Plessis made an unbeaten 58 and put on a match-winning third-wicket stand of 115 with Ambati Rayudu, who hit 71, to help Chennai chase down a target of 163 in 19.2 overs.
