Chris Woakes takes six wickets as England bowl out Ireland for 38 to claim historic Test win

Fifth lowest score from a side batting first to go on and win a Test match

Chris Woakes took five wickets as England roared back to beat Ireland by 143 runs to win their Test match at Lord's.

England's 85 all out in their first innings is the fifth lowest made by a team that then went on to go on and win the Test.

England recovered from their batting disaster on Thursday, bowling out Ireland for 38 on Friday to win after only seven sessions of play.

Olly Stone had been bowled out to the first ball of the day as England were dismissed for 303 in their second innings, setting Ireland 182 to win in what was only their third Test.

Ireland had made it to 11-0 in pursuit of their target, but once captain William Porterfield had been caught behind by Jonny Bairstow off Woakes their ininngs fell apart.

Only fellow opener James McCollum (11) made double figures as Woakes (6-17) and Stuart Broad (4-19) tore through the batting in overcast conditions.

The Ireland innings lasted only 15.4 overs and equals the fifth lowest score made by a side in a Test match - the record remaining at 26 made by New Zealand in 1955 in Auckland against England.

England will now prepare for Thursday when the first Test of the Ashes takes place at Edgbaston against Australia.
