NEWMARKET // The Craven meeting heralds the real start of the flat season in Britain and today's feature, the Craven Stakes, showcases the 2,000 Guineas second favourite, Delegator. Delegator's credentials for next month's colts' Classic rest on his fifth-place finish in last season's Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes over Newmarket's straight seven furlongs. He drifted slightly to the right that day, not appreciating the uphill finish here, and it remains to be seen after 180 days whether he has strengthened up sufficiently to last out the mile this afternoon.
The colt's trainer, Brian Meehan, was bullish that his charge couldn't be better prepared. The son of Dansili put in an impressive piece of work last week on the Manton gallops. "It was a good bit of work and I could not have been happier with him," Meehan said. "He went very well, and judged on what I saw, I would have to be confident about our chances in the Guineas." Delegator faces seven opponents but for the first time, the royal blue silks of Godolphin line-up at this meeting. Godolphin have shipped out their horses to Britain a lot earlier than before due to the work going on at Nad Al Sheba. The Dubai-based operation relies on City Style, who won so impressively last month when leading home stablemate Liberation in the Meydan Classic.
Running around the turns of Nad Al Sheba though presents a vastly different assignment to the idiosyncratic track of Newmarket, a fact not lost on Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager. "City Style has never raced on a straight track in his life," he said. "He has got to tackle the undulations and dip of Newmarket, and we'll make plans from there." The Hamdan al Maktoum-owned Haafhd was the last colt to win the Craven and go on to win the 2,000 Guineas in 2004, but yesterday it was almost inconceivable that racegoers did not catch a glimpse of the winner of next month's 1,000 Guineas.
The red-hot favourite for the fillies' Classic, Rainbow View, along with the Rae Guest-trained Serious Attitude were allowed a rare racecourse gallop before last year's Fillies' Mile runner-up, Fantasia, won the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes. griddle@thenational.ae

The five stages of early child’s play

1. Solitary Play: This is where Infants and toddlers start to play on their own without seeming to notice the people around them. This is the beginning of play.
2. Onlooker play: This occurs where the toddler enjoys watching other people play. There doesn’t necessarily need to be any effort to begin play. They are learning how to imitate behaviours from others. This type of play may also appear in children who are more shy and introverted.
3. Parallel Play: This generally starts when children begin playing side-by-side without any interaction. Even though they aren’t physically interacting they are paying attention to each other. This is the beginning of the desire to be with other children.
4. Associative Play: At around age four or five, children become more interested in each other than in toys and begin to interact more. In this stage children start asking questions and talking about the different activities they are engaging in. They realise they have similar goals in play such as building a tower or playing with cars.
5. Social Play: In this stage children are starting to socialise more. They begin to share ideas and follow certain rules in a game. They slowly learn the definition of teamwork. They get to engage in basic social skills and interests begin to lead social interactions.

Commission caps
For life insurance products with a savings component, Peter Hodgins of Clyde & Co said different caps apply to the saving and protection elements:
• For the saving component, a cap of 4.5 per cent of the annualised premium per year (which may not exceed 90 per cent of the annualised premium over the policy term).
• On the protection component, there is a cap of 10 per cent of the annualised premium per year (which may not exceed 160 per cent of the annualised premium over the policy term).
• Indemnity commission, the amount of commission that can be advanced to a product salesperson, can be 50 per cent of the annualised premium for the first year or 50 per cent of the total commissions on the policy calculated.
• The remaining commission after deduction of the indemnity commission is paid equally over the premium payment term.
• For pure protection products, which only offer a life insurance component, the maximum commission will be 10 per cent of the annualised premium multiplied by the length of the policy in years.
Disclosure
Customers must now be provided with a full illustration of the product they are buying to ensure they understand the potential returns on savings products as well as the effects of any charges. There is also a “free-look” period of 30 days, where insurers must provide a full refund if the buyer wishes to cancel the policy.
“The illustration should provide for at least two scenarios to illustrate the performance of the product,” said Mr Hodgins. “All illustrations are required to be signed by the customer.”
Another illustration must outline surrender charges to ensure they understand the costs of exiting a fixed-term product early.
Illustrations must also be kept updatedand insurers must provide information on the top five investment funds available annually, including at least five years' performance data.
“This may be segregated based on the risk appetite of the customer (in which case, the top five funds for each segment must be provided),” said Mr Hodgins.
Product providers must also disclose the ratio of protection benefit to savings benefits. If a protection benefit ratio is less than 10 per cent "the product must carry a warning stating that it has limited or no protection benefit" Mr Hodgins added.
