ROME // Claudio Ranieri has offered his resignation as AS Roma coach following his team's 4-3 defeat to Genoa in Serie A. He has been replaced by Youth-team coach Vincenzo Montella
"At the final whistle at the end of a pulsating match, I went into the changing room to thank the team for how it played and decided to offer my resignation," ANSA news agency quoted Ranieri as saying.
Roma were three goals ahead before Genoa fought back with two goals each from Rodrigo Palacio and Alberto Paloschi. It was Roma's fourth consecutive defeat and followed a week in which there were protests outside of the club's training ground by fans.
In the league, Roma lost 5-3 to Inter Milan and 2-0 to Napoli before slipping to a 3-2 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
Roma are currently eighth in the Serie A – 10 points behind the third automatic Champions League place.
"I have always thought about what is best for Roma, the club and the team," Ranieri said. "We took to the field with the desire to fight and win, for everyone who loves the shirt and the city."
The team went straight from Fiumicino airport to their training centre where around 50 supporters threw eggs and bottles at the team bus, ANSA reported.
Montella, a former Roma striker, will lead the side for the remainder of the season with the Giallorossi still alive in the Champions League and the Coppa Italia.
