Manchester City face an uphill task in their Uefa Cup quarter-final second leg against Hamburg after losing 3-1 at the Nordbank Arena last night. City got off to a sensational start with Stephen Ireland putting them ahead after just 30 seconds. He started and finished the move, first picking out Robinho with a wonderful long ball. The Brazilian cut inside and released Ireland, who had continued his run. And the Irishman showed little hesitation to slide a shot beyond goalkeeper Frank Rost for his 11th goal of the season to leave Hamburg stunned. The hosts responded, however, and Shay Given made a marvellous point-blank save from Mladen Petric in the fifth minute. Three minutes later Michael Gravgaard forced another superb block from Given before Hamburg equalised. Joris Mathijsen peeled away from his marker following a corner from Piotr Trochowski and although Given got a hand to the ball he could prevent the defender scoring.
Both teams had set a blistering pace early on and the second half began in a more sedate fashion. However the atmosphere in the stadium remained electric with the game evenly balanced. Hamburg almost went ahead in the 61st minute when Jonathan Pitroipa got on the end of a corner from Trochowski, only for Shaun Wright-Phillips to scramble the ball off the line with Given beaten. It was good defensive work by the midfielder and City were no doubt grateful to him. However the home side maintained the momentum and took the lead two minutes later when Micah Richards handled Mathijsen's effort to give away a penalty. Richards could have little complaint as Trochowski stepped up and slotted his penalty kick coolly past Given to put Hamburg 2-1 ahead.
Jose Paolo Guerrero made it 3-1 on 79 minutes and City were left holding on at the end before the referee blew the final whistle. *PA Sport
