DUBAI // Bruce Birtwistle, the UAE coach, has moved to counter the threat of Kazakhstan's tough forward pack by summoning Mike Riley, the Dubai Exiles prop, into the squad for tomorrow's Asian Five Nations match.
The strength of the Kazakhs' scrum, allied to the goalkicking expertise of their full-back Maxim Lifontov, has traditionally been their main attacking weapon.
Riley was a mainstay of the Arabian Gulf side in recent years, but was overlooked for the UAE's tournament opener in Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Both starting props from that day, Chris Jones Griffiths and Dan Boatwright, have been retained in the 22-man squad, but Birtwistle has sought the experience of Riley in place of Mohannad Shaker, the Emirati newcomer, who was an unused replacement.
The Canadian's experience could be valuable in more than just his ability as a prop. Kazakhstan's reputation as a fiery side was reinforced at the weekend when they had two players sent off - one for a butt, the other for a punch - in their home defeat to Hong Kong.
As a former head of security for Oscar de la Hoya, the champion boxer, Riley is likely to thrive in what Birtwistle expects to be a "ding-dong battle" in Abu Dhabi.
"We are confident we can build on [the draw against Sri Lanka] and deliver a positive result against Kazakhstan," Birtwistle said.
In the only other change to the squad, Cyrus Homayoun, the Emirati three-quarter from the Dubai Dragons, replaces Stephan Imbert of the Dubai Frogs.
Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.

The Energy Research Centre
Founded 50 years ago as a nuclear research institute, scientists at the centre believed nuclear would be the “solution for everything”.
Although they still do, they discovered in 1955 that the Netherlands had a lot of natural gas. “We still had the idea that, by 2000, it would all be nuclear,” said Harm Jeeninga, director of business and programme development at the centre.
"In the 1990s, we found out about global warming so we focused on energy savings and tackling the greenhouse gas effect.”
The energy centre’s research focuses on biomass, energy efficiency, the environment, wind and solar, as well as energy engineering and socio-economic research.

Stuart Ritchie, director of wealth advice at AES International, says children cannot learn something overnight, so it helps to have a fun routine that keeps them engaged and interested.
“I explain to my daughter that the money I draw from an ATM or the money on my bank card doesn’t just magically appear – it’s money I have earned from my job. I show her how this works by giving her little chores around the house so she can earn pocket money,” says Mr Ritchie.
