Jimmy Briand scored a goal in each half as Rennes defeated St Etienne 2-0 in the all-Ligue 1 affair in the last 32 of the Coupe de France. The striker rounded Les Verts goalkeeper Jeremie Janot and stroked in the opener towards the end of the first half, and then headed home Jerome Leroy's cross in the 87th minute to seal the Brittany club's passage into the last 16. There was only one big shock as Ligue 1 side Caen slipping up 3-1 at Boulogne-sur-Mer, who play in the second division. The northerners fell two goals behind early on, but prolific French striker Steve Savidan reduced the deficit before half-time.

The hosts grabbed their third through Gregory Thil three minutes from time to clinch victory. Elsewhere, Toulouse showed no mercy against Schirrhein, thrashing the lowest-ranked team left in the competition 8-0 in Haguenau. Schirrhein, who play in France's seventh tier, were no match for Les Violets as Soren Larsen helped himself to four as the Ligue 1 side enjoyed themselves in front of goal.
