GOSFORD// A late try by Oliver Wilkes saw Scotland record their first-ever World Cup win, but the 18-16 victory over Fiji was not enough to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Steve McCormack's side needed to win by 28 points to progress to the semi-final qualifier against Ireland on Monday. Although they rarely threatened to achieve that, they can still draw immense pride from a gutsy display against Fiji, who now go forward to face the Irish.
The Scots led 12-4 at half-time, but Fiji hit back to draw level going into the closing stages. A second try by Bradford winger Semi Tadulala then put the Fijians in front, only for Wilkes to plunge over and draw the teams level again. Scottish captain Danny Brough slotted the conversion to create history for McCormack's men. Scotland scored the opening try through winger Jon Steel but the Fijians got on the scoreboard with Tadulala's first try.
Scotland's scored again right on half-time when a Brough kick struck the upright and full-back Michael Robertson reacted the quickest to just touch down. However, 10 minutes into the second half the Fijians were level as Jason Bukuya somehow forced the ball down. Tadulala's second try looked to have won it for Fiji until Wilkes and Brough's dramatic scores. * PA Sport
