After failing to pull together the pieces for a world title bout featuring the British boxer Amir Khan, the UAE’s quest to make boxing a mainstream sport in the country has taken another hit.
Abu Dhabi’s first live professional boxing event – Thursday Night Fights at Yas Island – was scheduled to take place on Thursday and feature top international fighters as well as local and regional boxing stars, but it has been postponed to December 19.
The former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams, the Morocco welterweight champion Said Ouali, as well as Dubai’s Mohammed Ali Bayat were to fight at Yas Island’s 5,000-seat du Forum.
The US promoters Lion Heart Boxing Productions said yesterday the boxing card has been pushed back.
“We have failed to do some things in terms of preparations and rules and regulations to organize the fights, so we need more time to work on it, but fights will surely go ahead on December 19,” said Edward Mendy, a spokesman for Lion Heart.
“All fighters are on board for December 19. One of them has reacted much more than others, but if that fighter pulls out, then we will replace him with a fighter of similar calibre.”
Bayat expressed frustration with the delay.
“This is very disappointing, I was looking forward to this fight,” said the cruiserweight, unbeaten in three fights. “I have been training every day so hard and today I get a call from the organizers that the fight is being postponed to December.
“All this hard work, focus and training were for nothing. This is very unprofessional and not acceptable. A boxing bout once fixed should be changed only if a boxer gets injured, not when the organizers feel like.”
Meanwhile, in the world heavyweight scene, Lennox Lewis has dismissed reports that he is preparing to make a comeback to fight one of the Klitschko brothers.
Lewis took to Twitter to insist he has no intention of stepping back in the ring at the age of 48. Lewis tweeted: “A hypothetical answer to a hypothetical question does NOT equal reality #NoComeback”, before adding: “I’m not stepping back in the ring but I AM looking for the next crop of new talent!”
Lewis’ response will kill off rumours he was preparing to accept a world record purse in excess of $100million (Dh367.3m) to provide the Klitschkos with some much-needed competition.
Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his world title in Moscow last Saturday night with a routine victory over the widely regarded best available challenger, Alexander Povetkin.
Lewis last fought when he beat Vitali Klitschko in June 2003, and despite sporadic reports to the contrary, he has resisted the temptation to make a comeback.

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.

How to keep control of your emotions
If your investment decisions are being dictated by emotions such as fear, greed, hope, frustration and boredom, it is time for a rethink, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says.
Greed
Greedy investors trade beyond their means, open more positions than usual or hold on to positions too long to chase an even greater gain. “All too often, they incur a heavy loss and may even wipe out the profit already made.
Tip: Ignore the short-term hype, noise and froth and invest for the long-term plan, based on sound fundamentals.
Fear
The risk of making a loss can cloud decision-making. “This can cause you to close out a position too early, or miss out on a profit by being too afraid to open a trade,” he says.
Tip: Start with a plan, and stick to it. For added security, consider placing stops to reduce any losses and limits to lock in profits.
Hope
While all traders need hope to start trading, excessive optimism can backfire. Too many traders hold on to a losing trade because they believe that it will reverse its trend and become profitable.
Tip: Set realistic goals. Be happy with what you have earned, rather than frustrated by what you could have earned.
Frustration
Traders can get annoyed when the markets have behaved in unexpected ways and generates losses or fails to deliver anticipated gains.
Tip: Accept in advance that asset price movements are completely unpredictable and you will suffer losses at some point. These can be managed, say, by attaching stops and limits to your trades.
Boredom
Too many investors buy and sell because they want something to do. They are trading as entertainment, rather than in the hope of making money. As well as making bad decisions, the extra dealing charges eat into returns.
