Blue Bunting can confirm her star status in Darley Yorkshire Oaks
Blue Bunting can confirm her star status with victory in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, the feature event on the second day of York's Ebor meeting.
The three-year-old faces eight rivals in the all-aged 12 furlong heat on the Knavesmire but she arrives in sparkling form after landing a second Classic success last time.
Her victory in the 1000 Guineas back in May was a surprise to all, including her Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, as a mile looked to be far too short on breeding.
She stayed on stoutly in tough conditions that day and her Guineas run was enough to see her sent off favourite for the Oaks at Epsom.
The Dynaformer filly found nothing in her favour on the Downs though, with Frankie Dettori suffering a nightmare run which culminated in him dropping his hands and losing third place, on a day to forget.
He made amends in style with a well-judged ride on Blue Bunting at the Curragh last month, producing the filly with a perfectly-timed charge to pip the reopposing Banimpire by a short head and regain the winning thread.
While a quirky sort who is prone to flash her tail, Blue Bunting was certainly not stopping in Ireland and will find the likely easy conditions at York in her favour too.
The likes of Snow Fairy and Crystal Capella are worthy adversaries, but the weight advantage enjoyed by Blue Bunting could prove crucial.
Al Zarooni and the Godolphin team should also be celebrating after the Jaguar Cars Lowther Stakes as Gamilati looks to hold every chance of a second Group Two victory.
Beaten in a hot Newmarket maiden on her debut, Gamilati had to give best to follow Godolphin runner Discourse on her next start — form which looks very strong in light of that filly's recent romp in the Sweet Solera.
Gamilati enjoyed her moment in the sun in the Cherry Hinton, belying her maiden tag to run out a length-and-a-half winner without really coming under strong pressure.
Angels Will Fall would be a popular winner for the retiring Barry Hills, but Gamilati should prove the stronger and can spoil the party.
