Black Caviar on track to make history in Australia

Victory in Adelaide tomorrow would make horse the most successful thoroughbred in Australasia.

Mophetville may not be one of the most famous racecourses in the world but the Adelaide track in Australia could be the stage on which Black Caviar becomes the most successful thoroughbred in Australasian history tomorrow morning.

The world's best sprinter lines up against nine rivals in the Sportingbet Classic, having accumulated 19 consecutive victories. Unsurprisingly the Morphetville executive has sold all of its 30,000 ticket allocation as racegoers hope to witness a slice of history. The mare is in line to surpass the record of wins she shares with Desert Gold and Gloaming, who raced in the early 20th century.

The weather could literally rain on her parade, however, as showers are forecast for the area, which adds the only unknown ingredient to what is likely to be a procession. Black Caviar has never raced on soft ground, although she has proved successful nine times on good to soft and trainer Peter Moody does not envisage the conditions to be an excuse.

"It's not a major concern. The only way I would have any issues on running her is if the surface was unsafe or presented some risk to her long-term, but hopefully that's not the case," the trainer said.

It has been 10 weeks since Black Caviar was pushed to within one and three quarter lengths by Hay List in the Lightning Stakes. With a visit to Royal Ascot in England set for June, Moody has been mindful to not give her too much down time during the hiatus.

"We didn't let her out of work at all. We kept her ticking over the whole time," Moody added. "She's a bit above her peak racing weight but you'd expect her to be ahead of a couple of runs here before she heads overseas.

"She's got nice improvement in her."
